Philippine Navy Cycling Team
The Philippine Navy Cycling Team, also known as Philippine Navy–Standard Insurance due to sponsorship reasons, is a cycling team based in the Philippines. Managed by the Philippine Navy, the team is unable to turn to a UCI Continental since the Armed Forces of the Philippines General Headquarters does not allow military personnel to have frequent overseas trips. The team is also sponsored by Standard Insurance Group headed by chairman Ernesto Echauz who is also a sports patron who supports sailing. Consequentially, the team also have employees from Standard among its ranks. The team is a frequent competitor in the Le Tour de Filipinas and the Ronda Pilipinas. Many of the Philippine Navy's members has also become part of the Philippine national team. The Philippine Navy (PN) () is the naval warfare service branch of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. It has an estimated strength of 24,500 active service personnel, including the 10,300-strong Philippine Marine Corps. It operates 91 combat vessels, 16 auxiliary vessels, 25 manned aircraft and 8 unmanned aerial vehicles. Tracing its roots from the Philippine Revolutionary Army, Philippine Revolutionary Navy on May 20, 1898, while its modern foundations were created during the creation of the Offshore Patrol on February 9, 1939, the PN is currently responsible for naval warfare operations and maritime patrol missions within the Philippine Waters, as well as ensuring the protection of the Philippine's maritime interests, including the South China Sea and Benham Rise. The MPTC Tour of Luzon (TOL; under sponsorship by the Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation) is an annual professional road bicycle racing stage race held in Luzon, Philippines since 1955 as part of the UCI Asia Tour. It is held in April every year. While the course changes every year, the tour traditionally ends at Rizal Park, Manila, although recently the tour has ended in Baguio after being licensed by the UCI. Established as the Tour of Luzon, the stage race was previously known under various names including the Marlboro Tour, Tour of Calabarzon, Tour Pilipinas and Padyak Pinoy, and Le Tour de Filipinas. Ronda Pilipinas (Around the Philippines) is an annual professional road cycling competition held usually in the first quarter of the year in the Philippines. It is organized by LBC Express, the leading courier service provider in the country, thru the help of 3Q Sports and sanctioned by the International Cycling Union and the Integrated Cycling Federation of the Philippines (PhilCycling) headed by cycling patron Bambol Tolentino. It was formed in 2011 with Santy Barnachea as the inaugural champion of the 1,650 km, 12-stage initial bike-a-thon. In 2016, RP will be doing a 3-leg traditional route that covers Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao starting with the Mindanao route from Butuan City to Cagayan de Oro and Malaybalay, Bukidnon on February 20–27, Visayas route from Bago City to Roxas City on March 11–17 and Luzon route from Sta.
