Pharmaceutical Accountability Foundation
The Pharmaceutical Accountability Foundation (in Dutch Stichting Farma Ter Verantwoording) was established in Amsterdam in July 2018 to deal with pharmaceutical companies that demand excessive prices for medicines in the Netherlands. This followed a report by the in 2017. Wilbert Bannenberg, an epidemiologist, is the chairman. The group plans to deploy both health and pharmaceutical expertise and lawyers. They have investigated 12 cases all with the same business model, which they describe as: "buy an old, cheap product, get the old versions off the market, win orphan drug designation, and put up the price as high as you can." They say that European orphan drug legislation needs to be reformed. Leadiant Biosciences, formerly known as Sigma-Tau Industrie Farmaceutiche Riunite, was founded in 1957 by research chemist Claudio Cavazza. In 2018 Leadiant Biosciences has come under fire for creating a monopoly for CDCA and unnecessarily increasing the price by a factor of 335. Construction began in 1964 of an industrial facility in Pomezia equipped with state-of-the-art automatic production machinery to provide steady employment for 64 people. The choice of Pomezia for its headquarters created one of the first industrialization and urban development initiatives in an area of Central-southern Italy that had previously been mainly devoted to agriculture. Chenodeoxycholic Acid
Chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA; also known as chenodesoxycholic acid, chenocholic acid and 3α,7α-dihydroxy-5β-cholan-24-oic acid) is a bile acid. Salts of this carboxylic acid are called chenodeoxycholates. Chenodeoxycholic acid is one of the main bile acids. It was first isolated from the bile of the domestic goose, which gives it the "cheno" portion of its name (Greek: χήν = goose). Structure Chenodeoxycholic acid and cholic acid are the two primary bile acids in humans. Chenodeoxycholic acid has two hydroxyl groups and is modified with the addition of another hydroxyl group to produce cholic acid. Some other mammals have muricholic acid or deoxycholic acid rather than chenodeoxycholic acid. Cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis, also called cerebral cholesterosis, is an autosomal recessive form of xanthomatosis. It falls within a group of genetic disorders called the leukodystrophies.
