''Phaeosaccion'' is a genus of algae with monostromatic tubular to saccate thalli, up to long and to wide. It is the sole genus in the family Phaeosaccionaceae. It is olive brown and resembles young plants of ''Scytosiphon''. The sole species in the genus is ''Phaeosaccion collinsii'', a species of marine algae. It was first identified in a publication by W.G. Farlow in the article ''Notes on New England algae'' published in ''Bulletin of the Torrey Botanical Club'' in 1882. It was named in honor of Frank Shipley Collins.Makers of American Botany, Harry Baker Humphrey, Ronald Press Company, Library of Congress Card Number 61-18435 ''Phaeosacchion collinsii'' is red listed in Iceland as a vulnerable species A vulnerable species is a species which has been Conservation status, categorized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as being threatened species, threatened with extinction unless the circumstances that are threatened species, ... Ochrophyta
The ochrophytes, subphylum Ochrophytina, is a group of mostly photosynthesis, photosynthetic heterokonts. Their plastid is of Red algae, red algal origin. The classification of the group is still being worked out. Originally, the ochrophytes were regarded as a phylum denominated Ochrophyta. Some authors (e.g., Thomas Cavalier-Smith, Cavalier-Smith) divided it into two subphyla, Phaeista Cavalier-Smith 1995 (comprising Hypogyristea and Chrysista in some classifications, or Limnista and Marista (alga), Marista in others) and Khakista Cavalier-Smith, 2000 (comprising ''Bolidomonas'' and diatoms). Others prefer not to use the subphyla, listing only lower taxa (e.g., Reviers, 2002, Guiry & Guiry, 2014). However, it is currently regarded as a subphylum inside of the phylum Gyrista, along with Pseudofungi and Bigyromonada. It contains two infraphyla: Diatomista, containing diatoms and related groups, and Chrysista, containing brown and golden algae and related groups. Phylogeny The c ...
