Petros Clerides
Petros Clerides (born 20 February 1946) is the former attorney general of Cyprus. He resigned in 2013, after widespread criticism of his handling of high-profile cases. Personal life Petros Clerides was born on 20 February 1946 in Nicosia. He was educated at the Pancyprian Gymnasium, and the University of Athens, where he graduated in 1969 with a bachelor's degree in Law. Career Clerides was appointed deputy attorney general of Cyprus in 2000, and attorney general in 2005, resigned in June 2016, effective in September, and was replaced with Supreme Court judge Costas Clerides. Clerides had faced calls to resign after reports that he had used his position to have a drink-driving prosecution against his son suspended. His son was over the alcohol limit, and the car did not have a MOT or road tax. Pancyprian Gymnasium
The Pancyprian Gymnasium (Greek: Παγκύπριον Γυμνάσιον) is the oldest still operational high school in Cyprus, founded in 1812. History In the same location as the current school there was an older school established in 1753 known as Ellinomouseion (Ελληνομουσείον). The Pancyprian Gymnasium was founded in 1812 by Archbishop Kyprianos at a time when Cyprus was still under Ottoman rule. It was originally called the Hellenic School of Nicosia (Ελληνική Σχολή Λευκωσίας) and is the oldest high school still in operation on the island. The school was expanded in 1893, by the initiative of Archbishop Sophronius III, to incorporate a lyceum when Cyprus was under British rule, therefore making it equal to Greek high schools and its students were eligible to study at the University of Athens. Costas Clerides
Costas J. Clerides (born 1952) is a former attorney general of Cyprus having served between 2013 – 2020. Personal life Costas Clerides was born in 1952 in Nicosia, and educated at the Pancyprian Gymnasium until 1970. He is the son of Lefkos Clerides, and first cousin once removed of Glafkos Clerides, who was President of Cyprus from 1993 to 2003. Clerides served as an officer in the Cyprus National Guard for two years, before reading law in London, where he was called to the Bar at the Middle Temple. Clerides is married, and has one son. Career Clerides practiced law for 10 years as a partner in the law firm Lefkos Clerides and Sons. In 1988, Clerides was appointed a district judge, and senior district judge in 1996, and in 1997 he was promoted to district court president. Helios Airways Flight 522 was a scheduled passenger flight from Larnaca, Cyprus, to Prague, Czech Republic, with a stopover in Athens, Greece. Shortly after take-off on 14 August 2005, air traffic control (ATC) lost contact with the aircraft operating the flight, named ''Olympia''; it eventually crashed near Grammatiko, Greece, killing all 121 passengers and crew on board. It is the deadliest aviation accident in Greek history. An investigation into the crash by the Air Accident Investigation and Aviation Safety Board (AAIASB) concluded that the crew had neglected to set the pressurization system to automatic during the take-off checks.
