Petra Ojaranta
Petra Ojaranta (born March 17, 1976, Turku) is a Finnish ringette player. She is one of Finland's most successful ringette players of all time and has been involved in winning six World Ringette Championships, including the 1998 EuroTour, playing for the Finland national ringette team. Ojaranta also competed in two national ringette leagues, SM Ringette in Finland and the National Ringette League in Canada, as well as the Ringette World Club Championship and Canadian Ringette Championships. Career Petra Ojaranta developed a passion for ringette at the age of 9. She started playing for the Turku club and during her career represented the South West Finland region with various clubs including Turku, VG-62 and (EKS). World Ringette Championships Ojaranta competed in the World Ringette Championships eight times. The 1996 World Ringette Championship (''1996 WRC'') was an international ringette tournament and the 4th (IX) World Ringette Championships. The tournament was organized by the International Ringette Federation (IRF) and was contested in Stockholm, Sweden, from April 15 to 20, 1996. WRC 1996 was the first time all competing teams represented individual nations with Canada creating its first, singular, all-Canadian team. Overview Team Canada won the gold medal beating Team Finland 6–5 in extra time. Team Canada took home the gold and the Sam Jacks Trophy, the first year the updated design of the trophy was awarded. Ringette is a winter team sport played on an ice rink using ice hockey skates, straight sticks with drag-tips, and a blue, rubber, pneumatic ring designed for use on ice surfaces. While the sport was originally created exclusively for female competitors, it has expanded to now include participants of all gender identities. Although ringette looks ice hockey-like and is played on ice hockey rinks, the sport has its own lines and markings, and its offensive and defensive play bear a closer resemblance to lacrosse or basketball. VG-62 is a sports club based in Naantali, Finland. It was founded in 1962 and the name is an abbreviation of Naantali's old Latin name, "''Vallis gratiae''". The 2010 World Ringette Championships (''2010 WRC'') was an international ringette tournament and the 9th (IX) World Ringette Championships. The tournament was organized by the International Ringette Federation (IRF) and was contested in Tampere, Finland, between November 1 and November 6, 2010. The main competition took place at the Tampere Ice Stadium. The previous year the 2009 World Junior Ringette Championships took place in Prague, becoming the inaugural event for elite junior ringette athletes. The 2007 World Ringette Championships (''2007 WRC'') was an international ringette tournament and the 8th (VIII) of the World Ringette Championships. The tournament was organized by the International Ringette Federation (IRF) and was contested in Ottawa, Canada, between October 30 and November 3, 2007. The competition took place at the Ottawa Civic Centre which has since been renamed, "TD Place Arena" and was broadcast in Canada by Rogers TV.
