Peterhead Power Station
Peterhead Power Station is a multi-unit station owned and operated by SSE plc, with a capacity of 2,177 MW (1,550 MW transmissible). It is located near Boddam and the A90, just south of Peterhead, in Aberdeenshire, in the northeast of Scotland. It stands next to Sandford Lodge, a circa-1800-built structure. Initially operating as an oil-fired power station and later transitioning to fossil gas, the plant has also served as a site for experimental hydrogen generation capacity. In 2016, the site became embroiled in a controversy surrounding a failed hydrogen and carbon capture and storage scheme with BP, which ultimately proved unsuccessful. However, in 2022, the company proposed a new carbon capture and storage plan for the site. Aberdeenshire (; ) is one of the 32 Subdivisions of Scotland#council areas of Scotland, council areas of Scotland. It takes its name from the Shires of Scotland, historic county of Aberdeenshire (historic), Aberdeenshire, which had substantially different boundaries. Miller Oilfield
The Miller oilfield is a deep reservoir under the North Sea, 240 kilometres north-east of Peterhead in UKCS Blocks 16/7b and 16/8b. It was discovered in 1983 by BPMcClure, N.M., and Brown, A.A., Miller Field, 1992, in ''Giant Oil and Gas Fields of the Decade, 1978-1988'', AAPG Memoir 54, Halbouty, M.T., editor, Tulsa: American Association of Petroleum Geologists, , pp. 307–322 in a water depth of 100 metres. Production from Miller field started in June 1992, and plateau production was from late 1992 to 1997 at rates of up to of oil and of gas per day at standard conditions. Miller produced some of oil during its lifetime. The field is named after Hugh Miller who contributed to Scottish geology in the early nineteenth century. Heat Recovery Steam Generator
A heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) is a heat exchanger that recovers heat from a hot gas stream, such as a combustion turbine or other waste gas stream. It produces steam that can be used in a process (cogeneration) or used to drive a steam turbine (combined cycle). Combined Cycle
A combined cycle power plant is an assembly of heat engines that work in tandem from the same source of heat, converting it into mechanical energy. On land, when used to make electricity the most common type is called a combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant, which is a kind of gas-fired power plant. The same principle is also used for marine propulsion, where it is called a combined gas and steam (COGAS) plant. Combining two or more thermodynamic cycles improves overall efficiency, which reduces fuel costs. The principle is that after completing its cycle in the first engine, the working fluid (the exhaust) is still hot enough that a second subsequent heat engine can extract energy from the heat in the exhaust. Usually the heat passes through a heat exchanger so that the two engines can use different working fluids. To balance the supply and demand of electricity on short timescales, the UK National Grid has contracts in place with generators and large energy users to provide temporary extra power, or reduction in demand. These reserve services are needed if a power station fails for example, or if forecast demand differs from actual demand.
