Peterhead Power Station
Peterhead Power Station is a multi-unit station owned and operated by SSE plc, with a capacity of 2,177 MW (1,550 MW transmissible). It is located near Boddam and the A90, just south of Peterhead, in Aberdeenshire, in the northeast of Scotland. It stands next to Sandford Lodge, a circa-1800-built structure. Initially operating as an oil-fired power station and later transitioning to fossil gas, the plant has also served as a site for experimental hydrogen generation capacity. In 2016, the site became embroiled in a controversy surrounding a failed hydrogen and carbon capture and storage scheme with BP, which ultimately proved unsuccessful. However, in 2022, the company proposed a new carbon capture and storage plan for the site. The Miller oilfield is a deep reservoir under the North Sea, 240 kilometres north-east of Peterhead in UKCS Blocks 16/7b and 16/8b. It was discovered in 1983 by BPMcClure, N.M., and Brown, A.A., Miller Field, 1992, in ''Giant Oil and Gas Fields of the Decade, 1978-1988'', AAPG Memoir 54, Halbouty, M.T., editor, Tulsa: American Association of Petroleum Geologists, , pp. 307–322 in a water depth of 100 metres. Production from Miller field started in June 1992, and plateau production was from late 1992 to 1997 at rates of up to of oil and of gas per day at standard conditions. A combined cycle power plant is an assembly of heat engines that work in tandem from the same source of heat, converting it into mechanical energy. On land, when used to make electricity the most common type is called a combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant, which is a kind of gas-fired power plant. The same principle is also used for marine propulsion, where it is called a combined gas and steam (COGAS) plant. Combining two or more thermodynamic cycles improves overall efficiency, which reduces fuel costs. The principle is that after completing its cycle in the first engine, the working fluid (the exhaust) is still hot enough that a second subsequent heat engine can extract energy from the heat in the exhaust.
