Peter White (broadcaster)
Peter White MBE (born 1947, Winchester) is a visually impaired British broadcast journalist and DJ. Early life and career White was born in Winchester, Hampshire. Blind since birth (as was his elder brother), he attended New College Worcester, which was then known as the Worcester College for the Blind. He was a regular presenter on BBC Radio Solent from the station's launch in 1971 until November 2006, when he was downsized. He currently co-presents, for BBC Radio 4, '' You and Yours'' and since 1974 '' In Touch'', a programme for blind and partially sighted people. He also regularly contributes to other science, news or educational programmes to talk about disabilities. He was the presenter of Channel 4's ''Same Difference'' (1987–1989) and Central Television's ''Link'' (1989–1991). He was made the BBC's Disability Affairs Correspondent in 1995. Order Of The British Empire
The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding valuable service in a wide range of useful activities. It comprises five classes of awards across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a Orders, decorations, and medals of the United Kingdom#Modern honours, knight if male or a dame (title), dame if female. There is also the related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are affiliated with the order, but are not members of it. The order was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V, who created the order to recognise 'such persons, male or female, as may have rendered or shall hereafter render important services to Our Empire'. Libby Purves
Elizabeth Mary Purves, (born 2 February 1950) is a British radio presenter, journalist and author. Early life and career Born in London, a diplomat's daughter, Purves was raised in her mother's Catholic faith and educated at convent schools in Israel, Bangkok, South Africa and France, and at Beechwood Sacred Heart School, Royal Tunbridge Wells. Purves won a scholarship to St Anne's College, Oxford, where she was awarded a first class degree in English. She was elected Librarian of the Oxford Union. In 1971, she joined the BBC as a studio manager. By the mid-1970s she was a regular presenter on BBC Radio Oxford where she could be frequently heard on the station's early morning shows. In 1976, she joined the BBC Radio 4's ''Today'' programme as a reporter and became the programme's first woman presenter, alongside Brian Redhead and John Timpson, two years later. The ''Coventry Telegraph'' is a local English tabloid newspaper. It is published by Coventry Newspapers Limited, a subsidiary of Reach PLC Midlands Ltd, along with a number of other local publications. Publication history It was founded as ''The Midland Daily Telegraph'' in 1891 by William Isaac Iliffe (1843–1917), and was Coventry's first daily newspaper. Sold for half a penny, it was a four-page broadsheet newspaper. In 1917, ownership of the paper changed to Iliffe's son Edward Iliffe (later 1st Baron Iliffe), upon the father's death. Warwickshire Vision Support (formerly known as Warwickshire Association for the Blind) is a registered charity in England providing rehabilitation services for adults with visual impairments to enable them to live independently. Services are provided by Warwickshire Vision Support's rehabilitation team at offices in Warwick. History The Warwickshire Association for the Blind was founded in 1911 with the aim of preventing blindness and helping blind people in Warwickshire to promote their welfare. Radio Academy Awards
The Radio Academy Awards, started in 1983, were the most prestigious awards in the British radio industry. For most of their existence, they were run by ZAFER Associates, but in latter years were brought under the control of The Radio Academy. The awards were generally referred to by the name of their first sponsor, Sony, as The Sony Awards, The Sony Radio Awards or variations. Kara Louise Tointon (born 5 August 1983) is an English actress, known for portraying the role of Dawn Swann in the BBC soap opera ''EastEnders''. Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that can lead to damage of the optic nerve. The optic nerve transmits visual information from the eye to the brain. Glaucoma may cause vision loss if left untreated. It has been called the "silent thief of sight" because the loss of vision usually occurs slowly over a long period of time. A major risk factor for glaucoma is increased pressure within the eye, known as Intraocular pressure, intraocular pressure (IOP). It is associated with old age, a family history of glaucoma, and certain medical conditions or the use of some medications. Comic Relief is a British charity, founded in 1986 by the comedy scriptwriter Richard Curtis and comedian Sir Lenny Henry in response to the 1983–1985 famine in Ethiopia. The concept of Comic Relief was to get British comedians to make the public laugh, while raising money to help people around the world and in the United Kingdom.
