Peter the Great () is a 1937-1938 Soviet two-part historical film, historical biographical film, shot on the Order of Lenin from Leningrad film studio Lenfilm director Vladimir Petrov (director), Vladimir Petrov on the eponymous play by Aleksey Nikolayevich Tolstoy's devoted to the life and activity of the Russian Emperor Peter the Great, Peter I. Plot The historical film chronicles the life and state-building efforts of Peter I, the reformer and ruler of 18th-century Russia, focusing on the period from the ''Battle of Narva'' in 1700 to Peter's proclamation as Emperor in 1721. The story begins in 1700, with Tsar Peter and his trusted ally, Alexander Menshikov, arriving in Veliky Novgorod after the Russian defeat at Narva. Peter reprimands his son, Alexei, for neglecting to fortify the city and later admits to Menshikov that the "Narva fiasco" has taught him a crucial lesson. Vladimir Mikhailovich Petrov (, 22 July 1896 – 7 January 1966) was a Soviet and Russian film director, screenwriter and actor. He directed 24 films between 1928 and 1964. He was awarded Stalin Prize four times, and became a People's Artist of the USSR in 1950. Alexei Petrovich, Tsarevich Of Russia
Grand Duke Alexei Petrovich of Russia (28 February 1690 – 26 June 1718) was a Russian Tsarevich. He was born in Moscow, the son of Tsar Peter the Great, Peter I and his first wife, Eudoxia Lopukhina. Alexei did not get along with his father and repeatedly thwarted Peter's plans to raise him as successor to the throne and continue his policies. His brief defection to Austria scandalized the Russian government, leading to harsh reprisals against Alexei and his associates. Alexei died after interrogation under torture, and his younger half brother Peter Petrovich (1715–1719), Peter Petrovich became the new heir apparent. Count Pyotr Andreyevich Tolstoy (; 1645–1729) was a Russian statesman and diplomat, prominent during and after the reign of Peter the Great. He was the ancestor of all the Counts Tolstoy, including the novelist Leo Tolstoy (September 9 .S. August 28 1828 – November 20 .S. November 7 1910) and Alexei Tolstoy the writer. His wife was Solomonida Timofeevna Dubrovskaya born 1660 and died 1722; he had two sons with her, Ivan (born 1685) and Peter (born 1680). Both his sons died in exile with him the year before his own death. He was, however, survived by many grandchildren: the family was recalled by the Empress Elizabeth, daughter of Peter the Great in 1760, and had all honors and land restored.
