Peter Newell (architect)
Peter Newell (1916–2010) was an Australian architect, who worked in the modernist tradition in Queensland and became an architectural critic. Early life and career Peter Edward Newell was born on 30 September 1916 in Melbourne, Victoria. He trained as an architect in Melbourne, graduating with his B.Arch (with honours) from the University of Melbourne. He was a member of the editorial committee of the Royal Victorian Institute of Architects Students' Society journals, ''Smudges'' in 1937, along with Robin Boyd and Roy Simpson. In 1939 he proposed that work be reestablished on developing plans for small homes and this was picked up the Royal Victorian Institute of architects (RVIA) Small Homes Service (SHS). War Service Newell enlisted in the Australian Army Engineers in 1942. Modernist Style
Modern architecture, also called modernist architecture, or the modern movement, is an architectural movement and style that was prominent in the 20th century, between the earlier Art Deco and later postmodern movements. Modern architecture was based upon new and innovative technologies of construction (particularly the use of glass, steel, and concrete); the principle functionalism (i.e. that form should follow function); an embrace of minimalism; and a rejection of ornament. According to Le Corbusier, the roots of the movement were to be found in the works of Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, while Mies van der Rohe was heavily inspired by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The movement emerged in the first half of the 20th century and became dominant after World War II until the 1980s, when it was gradually replaced as the principal style for institutional and corporate buildings by postmodern architecture. Rigby Limited was an Australian book publisher, based in Adelaide. Their output consisted largely, but not exclusively, of Australian subjects, especially non-fiction, by Australian writers and artists. History The founder William Charles Rigby (March 1834 – 14 July 1913) was born in London. His parents had intended for him the life of a hatter, but he was attracted to bookselling, so was apprenticed to Parker & Sons of London and Oxford, where George Robertson and Samuel Mullen (both became bookshop owners in Melbourne) were fellow workers. Unk White
Cecil John White (1900 – March 1986), known under the pen name 'Unk' White, was an Australian cartoonist born in Auckland, New Zealand. White came to Sydney in 1922 with the artists Joe and Guy Lynch and was soon immersed in the bohemian scene there. He was a regular contributor to Australian magazines, notably ''Melbourne Punch'' and '' The Bulletin'', also ''Smith's Weekly'' and ''Beckett's Budget''. White produced the comic strips, ''Freckles'' in 1928 and ''The Adventures of Blue Hardy'' for ''Pix'' magazine in 1938. He was a foundation member of the Black and White Artists' Club and its first secretary. In 1944 Unk was accredited as an official war artist and saw active service with the RAAF and Royal Navy in New Guinea, the Pacific and Japan. He was also a highly regarded painter in watercolours.
