Peter Matthews (rebel)
Captain Peter Matthews (1796 - April 12, 1838) was a farmer and soldier who participated in the Upper Canada Rebellion of 1837. Biography He was born in the Bay of Quinte region of Upper Canada around 1789, the son of Captain Thomas Elmes Matthews and Mary Ruttan, United Empire Loyalists with both Dutch and French (including Huguenot) as well as English ancestry. In 1799, the family moved to Pickering Township. Peter Matthews served with Isaac Brock as a sergeant in the local militia during the War of 1812. In 1837, Matthews was active in the political union movement pressuring the British government to grant reforms, and in December of that year, was persuaded to lead a group from Pickering Township to join William Lyon Mackenzie's uprising. Matthews' group of 60 men arrived at Montgomery's Tavern on December 6 and, on the following day, were assigned to create a diversion on the bridge over the Don River. Peter Matthews (born 13 November 1989) is a Jamaican sprinter specialising in the 400 metres. He is an Olympic silver medalist as a member of the Jamaican 4 × 400 m relay team in Rio. He competed at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing reaching the semifinals. Peter Matthews (police Officer)
Sir Peter Jack Matthews (25 December 1917 – 6 January 2003) was a British police officer who rose to become Chief Constable of Suffolk Constabulary and the Surrey Police. He was born at Blackridge, West Lothian, Scotland and educated at Blackridge Public School. In 1937 he joined the Metropolitan Police, but during the Second World War was commissioned into the RAF in 1942 and flew as a pilot until demobilisation in 1946 with the rank of flight-lieutenant. He then returned to the Metropolitan Police to continue his career, rising to Chief Inspector in the early 1950s, and chief instructor at the Metropolitan Police Dog Training Establishment at Keston, Kent. Around that time he was seconded to the Cyprus Police, with a team of policemen and a pack of Alsatian dogs, with the task of detecting buried arms and ammunition during the EOKA crisis of 1955. Peter Hugoe Matthews
Peter Hugoe Matthews, FBA (10 March 1934 – 7 April 2023) was a British linguist and historian of linguistics. He was a fellow of St John's College, Cambridge, and formerly Professor and Head of the Department of Linguistics at the University of Cambridge (1980–2001). He was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 1985. Matthews is perhaps best known for his writings on linguistic morphology. He published two monographs on the subject. Matthews was an early follower of Noam Chomsky, but lost enthusiasm for the "generative enterprise" during the 1960s. He described the Chomskyan revolution as "the Best Thing that has happened to linguistics in the past 2500 years" (with his tongue squarely in his cheek, of course). But he also wrote that dominance of various Chomskyan ideas is not "a Good Thing, and I would not be disappointed if my study of their origins were to lead more scholars to question them". Peter Jeffrey Matthews (born 29 July 1942) is a British printmaker, former teacher at Royal College of Art, Royal College of Art (RCA) and senior lecturer at Wimbledon School of Art. Educated at Ealing Art College, Ealing School of Art, Matthews went on to assist at Editions Alecto and editioned most of David Hockney, David Hockney's early etchings. Matthews has also exhibited his own work extensively including at the Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Academy of Arts (RA), Royal Watercolour Society (RWS) Gallery, and with the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, being elected a Fellow and later Council Member 1984–98.
