Peter Kubelka
Peter Kubelka (born 23 March 1934) is an Austrian filmmaker, architect, musician, curator and lecturer. His films, few in number, are known to be carefully edited and extremely brief. He is known for his 1966 '' Unsere Afrikareise'' (Our Trip to Africa), and for other very short and intricately edited films. '' Arnulf Rainer'', a short film which alternates black and clear film, and white noise and silence, is considered a seminal work inscribing the edges of film theory. Conflated with a later effort by Tony Conrad called, "The Flicker", a notion developed that "flicker films" were a subcategory of experimental or avant garde. There wasn't, and Kubelka was creating a "pure" film with only the elements of dark and light. While not ignoring Kubelka's efforts, Conrad created a similar piece with a very different concept, focused more on rhythm and perceptual distortion. Kubelka preferred the concrete. Alberte Pagán, born in O Carballiño in 1965, is a Galician filmmaker and writer. Film criticism Alberte Pagán is a recognized theorist and researcher.Villarmea 2016, p. 236. Peter Tscherkassky (born October 3, 1958) is an Austrian avant-garde filmmaker who works primarily with found footage. All of his work is done with film and heavily edited in the darkroom, rather than relying on recent advances in digital film. Early life Tscherkassky was born October 3, 1958, in Vienna, Austria. He attended the Primary School in Mistelbach from 1965 to 1969 and Jesuit boarding school from 1969 to 1975 in Vienna. He attended BORG (high school) Mistelbach and graduated in June 1977. From 1977 to 1979 Tscherkassky studied journalism and political science as well as philosophy at the University of Vienna. His first encounter with avant-garde film was in January 1978 when he attended a five-day lecture series by P. Adams Sitney at the Austrian Film Museum. Susanna Kubelka von Hermanitz (20 September 1942 – 6 May 2024) was an Austrian-born French novelist whose works were written in German. Biography She was born on 20 September 1942 in Linz, Austria. Having left high school she briefly worked as a primary school teacher before graduating in English literature. In 1977 she took a Ph.D. with a thesis on the way women were represented in the 18th-century English novel. Later she worked as a journalist for the Vienna newspaper ''Die Presse''. She lived and worked in Australia and England for four years. She was divorced and from 1981 she permanently settled down in Paris. She claimed to favour a vegetarian lifestyle. ''Schwechater'' is a 1958 experimental short film by Austrian filmmaker Peter Kubelka. It is the second entry in his trilogy of metrical films, between '' Adebar'' and ''Arnulf Rainer''. Originally commissioned to make an advertisement for , Kubelka edited footage from the shoot based on a complex set of rules, producing a rapid procession of images. Although the company was displeased with the commercial, ''Schwechater'' found favour as a work of avant-garde cinema. Description ''Schwechater'' contains 1,440 frames, making it exactly one minute long when projected at the standard rate of 24 frames per second. Experimental Film
Experimental film or avant-garde cinema is a mode of filmmaking that does not apply standard cinematic conventions, instead adopting Non-narrative film, non-narrative forms or alternatives to traditional narratives or methods of working. Many experimental films, particularly early ones, relate to arts in other disciplines: painting, dance, literature and poetry, or arise from research and development of new technical resources. ''Our Trip to Africa'' () is a 1966 Austrian avant-garde short film by Peter Kubelka, originally commissioned as a travel diary documenting a wild game hunt. Kubelka used intricate editing strategies to produce a work about anti-colonialism. Production Photography Kubelka was hired in 1961 by a couple from Wels, Austria, to document a hunting trip they were taking with three other people. The group traveled from Wels through Yugoslavia to Athens, Greece. From there, they took a ship to Cairo, Egypt and traveled up the Nile. Over the course of the trip, Kubelka recorded three hours of film and fourteen hours of audio. He shot on Gevaert color positive stock. Since the film stock was sensitive to overexposure, he often intentionally underexposed it. Kubelka used simple compositions whose quick recognisability became useful as part of his elaborate editing strategies.
