Peter Black (Australian Politician)
Peter Laurence Black OAM (born 14 June 1943) is an Australian former who served as the member for Murray-Darling in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly between 1999 and 2007. Prior to this, he was mayor of Broken Hill from 1980 until 1999. Career Black was born in the Sydney suburb of Hurstville and educated at Sydney Boy's Technical High School and received a Bachelor of Science from the University of New South Wales. He was a Science teacher at Willyama High School in Broken Hill before running for New South Wales Parliament. Black became a Broken Hill Council Alderman in 1977 and served a record 19 years as mayor of Broken Hill from September 1980 until September 1999. Black represented Murray-Darling from 1999 to 2007 for the Labor Party. He was accused of having a drinking problem by other parliamentarians, including his political opponents. The New South Wales National Party (officially known as the National Party of Australia – N.S.W. and commonly known as the NSW Nationals) is an Australian political party in New South Wales which forms the state branch of the federal National Party. The party has generally been the junior partner in a centre-right Coalition with the NSW branch of the Liberal Party of Australia. John Williams (New South Wales State Politician)
John Douglas Williams (born 18 August 1948) is a former Australian politician, who was the Nationals member for Murray-Darling from 2007 to 2015. Williams was born on 18 August 1948 in Perth, where he spent the first four years of his life. He spent his next three years in Melbourne before moving to Broken Hill in 1955. He has lived there ever since. He studied economics, accounting and financial management externally through the University of New England. At the 2007 New South Wales state election, Williams won the seat of Murray-Darling. His candidacy was boosted by the redistribution prior to the election, which turned the seat from marginal Labor to marginal National. At the election, he defeated incumbent Labor MP Peter Black on a swing of nearly nine percent, turning Murray-Darling into a safe National seat at one stroke. The area contains an isolated mining city, Broken Hill, located in the outback of New South Wales and is surrounded by the Unincorporated Far West Region. 2007 New South Wales State Election
The 2007 New South Wales state election was held on Saturday, 24 March 2007. The entire Legislative Assembly and half of the Legislative Council was up for election. The Labor Party led by Morris Iemma won a fourth four-year term against the Liberal– National coalition led by Peter Debnam. Labor's majority survived the election almost intact going from a 13 seat majority prior to the election to a marginally decreased 11 seat majority. The Liberals succeeded in taking two independent-held seats and one Labor-held seat, whilst the Nationals and an independent each took one Labor-held seat. This would be NSW Labor's last state election win until 2023. It also remains the most recent contest in which NSW Labor formed a majority government. Murray-Darling is a former electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales. It included Urana Shire, Jerilderie Shire, Berrigan Shire, Murray Shire, Conargo Shire, Deniliquin Council, Wakool Shire, Hay Shire, Balranald Shire, Wentworth Shire, part of Carrathool Shire (including Goolgowi and Merriwagga), Central Darling Shire, the City of Broken Hill and the Unincorporated Far West. The New South Wales Labor Party, officially known as the Australian Labor Party (New South Wales Branch) and commonly referred to simply as NSW Labor, is the New South Wales branch of the Australian Labor Party (ALP). The branch is the current ruling party in the state of New South Wales and is led by Chris Minns, who has served concurrently as premier of New South Wales since 2023.
