Peter Beaumont (judge)
Peter Beaumont CBE King's Counsel, KC (born 10 January 1944) is a British barrister and retired judge. Beaumont was called to the barrister, Bar at Lincoln's Inn in 1967 where he later became a Bencher in 2001. He Queen's Counsel, took silk in 1986, and served as a Crown Court recorder (judge), Recorder from 1986 to 1989, before becoming a circuit judge (England and Wales), circuit judge. The recorder of London is an ancient legal office in the City of London. The recorder of London is the senior circuit judge at the Central Criminal Court (the Old Bailey), hearing trials of criminal offences. The recorder is appointed by the Crown on the recommendation of the City of London Corporation with the concurrence of the Lord Chancellor. The recorder's deputy is the Common Serjeant of London, appointed by the Crown on the recommendation of the Lord Chancellor. The recorder of London is, since 14 April 2020, Mark Lucraft. Background The first recorder of London was appointed in 1298. Originally it seems likely that the recorder would have recorded pleas in the court of the Lord Mayor and the aldermen and delivered their judgments. The Common Serjeant of London (full title The Serjeant-at-Law in the Common Hall) is an ancient British Law, legal office, first recorded in 1291, and is the second most senior permanent judge of the Old Bailey, Central Criminal Court after the Recorder of London, acting as deputy to that office, and sitting as a judge in the trial of criminal offences.
