Peter B. Sweeny
Peter Barr Sweeny (October 9, 1825 New York City – August 30, 1911 Mahopac, Putnam County, New York) was an American lawyer and politician from New York. Life He was the son of James Sweeny, who kept a hotel in Hoboken, New Jersey, and Mary (Barr) Sweeny. He attended Columbia College, then studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced law with James T. Brady in New York City. In 1852, he was appointed Public Administrator. He was New York County District Attorney in 1858, elected on the Democratic ticket in November 1857, but resigned due to ill health. Sweeny was City Chamberlain and Park Commissioner under Mayor A. Oakey Hall. He became notorious as a central figure in the ring that controlled Tammany Hall, and was depicted prominently in Thomas Nast's cartoons alongside Boss Tweed, Richard B. Connolly and A. Thomas Nast
Thomas Nast (; ; September 26, 1840December 7, 1902) was a German-born American caricaturist and editorial cartoonist often considered to be the "Father of the American Cartoon". He was a sharp critic of William M. Tweed, "Boss" Tweed and the Tammany Hall History of the Democratic Party (United States), Democratic Party political machine. He created a modern version of Santa Claus (based on the traditional German figures of Saint Nicholas#Germany, Saint Nicholas and Santa Claus, Weihnachtsmann) and the political symbol of the elephant for the History of the Republican Party (United States), Republican Party (GOP). Joseph Blunt
Joseph Blunt (February 1792June 16, 1860) was an American lawyer, author, editor, and politician from New York. In 1858, he was appointed New York County district attorney. Early life Blunt was born in February 1792 in Newburyport, Massachusetts. He was one of four sons of Edmund March Blunt. In 1802, Edmund published the ''American Practical Navigator'' by Nathaniel Bowditch, the man who became the godfather of Joseph's younger brother Nathaniel Bowditch Blunt. Career Joseph Blunt first came into notice by writing on the Missouri question in 1820. Soon afterward he wrote an article on the Laibach circular, published in the ''North American Review'', which attracted the attention of politicians. In 1825, he published a ''Historical Sketch of the Formation of the American Confederacy'' (8 vol.), and from 1827 to 1835 he edited the '' American Annual Register''. Erie Railroad
The Erie Railroad was a railroad that operated in the Northeastern United States, originally connecting Pavonia Terminal in Jersey City, New Jersey, with Lake Erie at Dunkirk, New York. The railroad expanded west to Chicago following its 1865 merger with the former Atlantic and Great Western Railroad, also known as the New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio Railroad (NYPANO RR). The mainline route of the Erie Railroad proved influential in the development and economic growth of the Southern Tier of New York state, including the cities of Binghamton, Elmira, and Hornell. The Erie Railroad repair shops were located in Hornell and was Hornell's largest employer.
