Peter (chief Mouser)
Peter was a cat who served as Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office of the United Kingdom between 1929 and 1946. Whilst Peter was the second cat to serve in this role, he is often considered the first, as his predecessor, Treasury Bill, served for less than a year, and was not officially given the title. Peter is described as being a black cat, and was a resident at the Home Office at the time of his appointment. In 1929, the Treasury agreed to allow one penny daily for Peter's upkeep, which included his food and wellbeing requirements. Until the approved spending bill began to better regulate Peter's diet, civil servants had been bringing Peter an excess of food through the day, causing him to neglect his primary role of catching mice. His newly limited diet proved effective at encouraging Peter to catch rodents. Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office is the title of the official resident cat at 10 Downing Street, the residence and executive office of the prime minister of the United Kingdom in London. There has been a resident cat in the British government employed as a mouser and pet since the 16th century, although modern records date only to the 1920s. Despite other cats having served Downing Street, the first one to be given the official title of Chief Mouser by the British government was Larry in 2011. Other cats have been given this title affectionately, usually by the British press. Munich Mouser
Munich Mouser was a cat who served as Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office. He served under Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain from 1937 to 1940, and also under Winston Churchill in 1943. He therefore served in the role at the same time as Peter, who was Chief Mouser from 1929 to 1946. The name "Munich Mouser" was a nickname given by Churchill due to his perception of the agreement signed by the cat's owner, Chamberlain, and Hitler – the Munich Agreement. When Churchill succeeded Chamberlain as Prime Minister, Churchill brought his own cat, Nelson, with him. These two cats "had a rivalry", which has been compared in the media to that between Larry and Palmerston. Peter III was a cat who served as the Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office from August 1947 to March 1964. History Peter III became Chief Mouser in August 1947, following the death of Peter II, who had been hit by a car. Peter III attracted the widespread public attention following an appearance on the BBC in 1958. This public affection appears to have spread to outside the UK, with Peter having a large 'fanbase' in both Italy and the United States.
