Pete Waddleton
Play Dead were an English rock band from Oxford that grew out of the English punk scene of the late 1970s/early 1980s. The band made three studio albums and one-off singles for four different small labels — Fresh Records, Jungle Records, Situation 2 and Clay Records — before forming their own label, Tanz, for their final album, ''Company of Justice'', produced by Conny Plank, which they released in 1985. The original line-up of Play Dead consisted of Rob Hickson (vocals), Pete Waddleton (bass guitar), Mark "Wiff" Smith (drums) and Re-Vox (guitar). In July 1981, Re-Vox was replaced by Steve Green. During their active years, Play Dead supported a number of acts, including the likes of Killing Joke, The Cult and The Sisters Of Mercy in the UK. The Tube (1982 TV Series)
''The Tube'' is a United Kingdom music television programme, which ran for five series, from 5 November 1982 to 24 April 1987. It was filmed in Newcastle upon Tyne and produced for Channel 4 by Tyne Tees Television, which had previously produced the similar music show '' Alright Now'' and the music-oriented youth show '' Check it Out'' for ITV; production of the latter ended in favour of ''The Tube''. ''The Tube'' was presented live by hosts including Jools Holland, Paula Yates, Leslie Ash, Muriel Gray, Gary James, Mark Miwurdz (Mark Hurst), Michel Cremona, Felix Howard, Tony Fletcher, Nick Laird-Clowes and Mike Everitt. Cherry Red Records is a British independent record label founded in Malvern, Worcestershire by Iain McNay in 1978. The label has released recordings by Dead Kennedys, Everything but the Girl, The Monochrome Set, and Felt, among others, as well as the compilation album ''Pillows & Prayers''. In addition to releasing new music, Cherry Red also acts as an umbrella for individual imprints and catalogue specialists. Cherry Red was listed by ''Music Week'' as one of the UK's top ten record companies in Q1 2015 for sales of artist albums. Dingwalls
Dingwalls Dancehall (original name at time of opening) is a live music and comedy venue adjacent to Camden Lock, Camden in London. The building itself is one of many industrial Victorian buildings which were put to new use in the 20th century. The original owner of the building, T.E. Dingwall, had his name painted on to the outside wall of the building, which was a common practice by businesses in Camden Town during the late Victorian era. The paint is still visible to this day, hence the venue's name. The 500-capacity venue was bought by promoter Vince Power in June 2020 and continues to host gigs of contemporary music. It was renamed and reopened as The PowerHaus after a copyright issue blocked the use of its original name. Power now has use of the name again and the building has returned to being Dingwalls. Resurrection (Play Dead Album)
Originally released in 1984, Play Dead's "Resurrection" is an eclectic album compared to their other releases. It ranges from synth-based tracks like "Conspiracy" to non-synth like "Pale Fire" and "Sacrosanct." The first release of "Resurrection" was " From the Promised Land". When "From the Promised Land" was originally released in May 1984, Play Dead decided they were dissatisfied with the recordings. At this time, only 1,000 copies of the original LP were pressed and released. The band remixed the eight tracks on the album. It was rereleased shortly and every copy of the album that featured the new mixes had the sticker "Remix" attached to the front cover. This was the second release of "From the Promised Land." The third edition was retitled "Resurrection" and featured eight new tracks. Company Of Justice
''Company of Justice'' is the final studio album of Play Dead. After an early series of signing with independent record labels (Fresh, Jungle, Situation 2 and Clay), Play Dead created their own record label called Tanz in early 1985 (under the umbrella of Red Rhino) just after the end of the '' From the Promised Land'' tour and used their label to release Company of Justice and the singles taken from it. The songs "Last Degree" and "Burning Down (long version)" were not part of the original LP release in 1985. "Burning Down (long version)" is also known as "Burning Down (Mezcal mix)." The short version of "Burning Down" is not available on CD. The album was produced by Konrad (Conny) Plank after he was asked by Brian Eno to produce what was to become U2’s Joshua Tree album, but declined, reportedly saying “I can’t work with that singer”. ''From the Promised Land'' is a 1984 album by Play Dead, and the original version of the band's ''Resurrection'' (1992). Only 1000 copies of the original LP were pressed before it was withdrawn, remixed and re-released, because the band members decided they were dissatisfied with the album. When this album was originally released, the same people who gave negative reviews of " The First Flower: A Six Track Album" practically praised this new album when it was released in May 1984. Conny Plank took notice of Play Dead and turned down a contract to produce U2's "The Unforgettable Fire" to produce Play Dead's next album ''Company of Justice'' instead . ''The First Flower'' is Play Dead's debut album, recorded at the Jungle Records studio in March 1983. Originally titled ''The First Flower: A Six Track Album'', this album came totally unexpected as the group had disappeared since their last record company Fresh Records had gone under.
