Persian Wildlife Heritage Foundation
The Persian Wildlife Heritage Foundation (PWHF; fa, مؤسسه حیات وحش میراث پارسیان) is an Iranian conservationist organization which studies and protects the endangered asiatic cheetah. Iranian-American businessman Morad Tahbaz is a co-founder of group. In January 2018, Iranian authorities arrested Tahbaz along with eight other PWHF-affiliated individuals, including Niloufar Bayani. Another member of the group, Kavous Seyed-Emami, an Iranian-Canadian academic and conservationist, died while in detention. A group of environmentalists founded PWHF in 2008 to address concern over the dwindling number of asiatic cheetahs. PWHF operated with the permission of the Iranian government and worked closely with Iran's Department of Environment. Asiatic Cheetah
The Asiatic cheetah (''Acinonyx jubatus venaticus'') is a critically endangered cheetah subspecies currently only surviving in Iran. It once occurred from the Arabian Peninsula and the Near East to the Caspian region, Transcaucasus, Kyzylkum Desert and northern South Asia, but was extirpated in these regions during the 20th century. The Asiatic cheetah diverged from the cheetah population in Africa between 32,000 and 67,000 years ago. The Asiatic cheetah survives in protected areas in the eastern-central arid region of Iran, where the human population density is very low. Between December 2011 and November 2013, 84 individuals were sighted in 14 different protected areas, and 82 individuals were identified from camera trap photographs. In December 2017, fewer than 50 individuals were thought to be remaining in three subpopulations that are scattered over in Iran's central plateau. Morad Tahbaz
Morad Tahbaz is an Iranian-American businessman and conservationist. He was born in London and holds British citizenship. Tahbaz is a co-founder of the Persian Wildlife Heritage Foundation (PWHF). In January 2018, Iranian authorities arrested Tahbaz along with eight other PWHF-affiliated individuals. In 2018, an Iranian Presidential Commission composed of Cabinet Ministers appointed by Iranian President Rouhani investigated allegations of spying and concluded that the facts do not support the claims against Tahbaz or his colleagues. Niloufar Bayani
Niloufar Bayani ( fa, نیلوفر بیانی; born 1986;) is an Iranian wildlife conservation biology researcher and activist. She was convicted in 2019 of espionage by Iranian authorities in a closed-door trial in Iran, and received a 10-year prison sentence. Early life and education Niloufar Bayani was born in 1986 in Tehran, Iran. She graduated in 2009 from McGill University in Canada with a BSc degree in biology, and holds an MA degree in Conservation Biology from Columbia University. Kavous Seyed-Emami
Kavous Seyed-Emami ( fa, کاووس سیدامامی; December 24, 1953 – February 8, 2018) was an Iranian-Canadian academic and conservationist. Seyed-Emami ran the Persian Wildlife Heritage Foundation (PWHF) and was a sociology professor. In February 2018, Iran's judiciary said that he killed himself while in detention in Evin Prison, Tehran, because of the evidence against him in a spying case. This claim, including the alleged suicide, has been rejected by his family. Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland offered her condolences and stated that Canada expects "the Government of Iran to provide information and answers into the circumstances surrounding this tragedy." Department Of Environment (Iran)
The Iranian Department of Environment is a governmental organization, under the supervision of the president, that is responsible for matters related to safeguarding the environment. The origins of the department can be traced back to the Hunting Club of Iran, established in 1956. Later, it developed into an organization overseeing hunting and fishing activities in the country. In 1971 the organization changed its name to its current one, and notably has hosted the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance in the city of Ramsar on the same year. The cat (''Felis catus'') is a domestic species of small carnivorous mammal. It is the only domesticated species in the family Felidae and is commonly referred to as the domestic cat or house cat to distinguish it from the wild members of the family. Cats are commonly kept as house pets but can also be farm cats or feral cats; the feral cat ranges freely and avoids human contact.
