Pernem is one of the 40 Legislative Assembly, Goa Legislative Assembly constituencies of the state of Goa in southern India. Pernem is also one of the 20 constituencies falling under North Goa Lok Sabha constituency. Pernem constituency is reserved for candidates belonging to the Dalits, Scheduled Castes. North Goa District
North Goa district is one of the two districts that constitutes the state of Goa, India. The district has an area of , and is bounded by Kolhapur and Sindhudurg districts of Maharashtra state to the north and by Belgavi district of Karnataka to the east, by South Goa district to the south, and by the Arabian Sea to the west. Historical background At the advent of the Portuguese in AD 1510, all of today's northern territories ( Ilhas, Bardez, Pernem, Bicholim, Antruz, and Sattari) were part of the Bijapur Sultanate. Ilhas and Bardez were annexed by the Portuguese after their successful conquest and the region is now called '' Velhas Conquistas'' (Old Conquests). After the fall of the Deccan sultanates and rise of the Marathas in the late 1600s, the remaining region eventually fell under the control of the Maratha Kingdom of Sawantwadi until AD 1783. Manohar Ajgaonkar
Manohar Trimbak Ajgaonkar (born 6 November 1954) is an Indian politician and member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Ajgaonkar is a first term member of the Goa Legislative Assembly in 2007 from the Dargalim (Goa Assembly constituency), Dhargalim constituency in Pernem. He started his career with Indian National Congress. He joined Bharatiya Janata Party in 2002 and won the seat. He returned to Indian National Congress in 2007 and retained the seat. He joined Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party in 2017. He also declared his candidature from Pernem (Goa Assembly constituency), Pernem constituency in North Goa. Ajgaonkar and Pauskar joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in March 2019 thus minimizing Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party to one seat in the Goa Legislative Assembly. 2017 Goa Legislative Assembly Election
The 2017 Goa Legislative Assembly election was held on 4 February 2017 to elect the 40 members of the Seventh Goa Legislative Assembly, as the term of Sixth Legislative Assembly ended on 18 March 2017. VVPAT-fitted EVMs was used in entire Goa state in the 2017 elections, which was the first time that an entire state in India saw the implementation of VVPAT. Rajendra Arlekar
Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar (born 23 April 1954) is an Indian politician who is currently the 23rd Governor of Kerala. Previously, he was the 29th Governor of Bihar and the 21st Governor of Himachal Pradesh, being the first Governor of Himachal Pradesh from Goa. He was also a Cabinet Minister in the Government of Goa and a former speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly. He is a leader of BJP. Early life Arlekar was born on 23 April 1954 at Panaji, Goa, to Vishwanath Arlekar and Tilomattama. The Goa legislative assembly election was held on 3 March 2012, to select the 40 members of the Sixth Goa Legislative Assembly, as the term of 5th Goa Legislative Assembly ended in March 2012. The result was announced on 6 March. The Bharatiya Janata Party- Maharashtrawadi Gomantak alliance defeated the incumbent Indian National Congress government in Goa led by Chief Minister Digambar Kamat with 24 seats in the 40-seat assembly.
