Permeke Library
The Permeke Library () is the main public library in Antwerp, Belgium. The library is open 7 days per week and visited by about 2,200 visitors a day. History The library is named after Oscar Permeke, a cousin of Constant Permeke, who used to run the garage Permeke Motors in the building previously. In 1982, the Permeke garage went bankrupt and closed its doors. The library opened on 22 April 2005, the last day on which Antwerp held the title of World Book Capital. The public library located at the ''Lange Nieuwstraat'' had closed on 1 September 2004. Constant Permeke
Constant Permeke (; 31 July 1886 – 4 January 1952) was a Belgian painter and sculptor who is considered the leading figure of Flemish Expressionism. Biography Permeke was born in Antwerp but when he was six years old the family moved to Ostend. Here his father, a landscape painter, founded in 1893 the Municipal Museum of Arts of which he became the curator. Permeke studied at the Bruges Academy from 1903 to 1906 and then at the Academy in Ghent from 1906 to 1908. Here he met Frits Van den Berghe and the brothers Gustave De Smet and Léon De Smet. He was drafted into the Belgian army and served in a university company that was quartered in Sint-Martens-Latem. After his military service ended in March 1908, Permeke returned to Ostend where he roomed together with Gustave De Smet. In 1909 he returned to Sint-Martens-Latem where he lived as a recluse. The World Book Capital (WBC) is an initiative of UNESCO which recognises cities for promoting books and fostering reading for a year starting on April 23, World Book and Copyright Day. Bart Moeyaert
Bart Peter Boudewijn Moeyaert (born 9 June 1964) is a Belgian writer. Early life Moeyaert was born in 1964 in Bruges as the youngest of seven brothers. He is named after the character Bartje in the book series by Anne de Vries and after Baudouin of Belgium (Boudewijn). As is tradition in Belgium, King Baudouin of Belgium is his godfather as Moeyaert is the seventh son in an unbroken succession of sons. Career Writing Moeyaert made his debut in 1983 with the book ''Duet met valse noten''. Moeyaert received the Prijs van de Kinder- en Jeugdjury voor het boek in Vlaanderen award for this book in 1984. In 1989, he published the book ''Suzanne Dantine'' which he considers to be his real debut with him transitioning from writer to author. Moeyaert later reworked the story into a new book '' Wespennest'' (1997).
