People Show
The People Show is the longest-running experimental theatre company in England, based in the London's East End. Founded by Jeff Nuttall, John Darling, Laura Gilbert, and Mark Long in 1966, and performing its first show in the basement of Better Books in London's Charing Cross Road, the People Show was London's first performance art company and has played a seminal role in the evolution of British experimental theatre. Though some People Show performances begin with scripts, these scripts serve mostly as starting points for devised, site-specific theatre by actors, musicians, poets, and artists. In 1969, they staged a performance at London's Royal Court Theatre during which they invited passersby into a telephone booth to look at "dirty postcards", only to present them with "two sugar lumps... coloured with red ink or, alternatively, a bra stuffed with baked beans." Experimental Theatre
Experimental theatre (also known as avant-garde theatre), inspired largely by Wagner's concept of Gesamtkunstwerk, began in Western theatre in the late 19th century with Alfred Jarry and his Ubu plays as a rejection of both the age in particular and, in general, the dominant ways of writing and producing plays. The term has shifted over time as the mainstream theatre world has adopted many forms that were once considered radical. Like other forms of the avant-garde, it was created as a response to a perceived general cultural crisis. Despite different political and formal approaches, all avant-garde theatre opposes bourgeois theatre. It tries to introduce a different use of language and the body to change the mode of perception and to create a new, more active relation with the audience. Academy Of Live And Recorded Arts
The Academy of Live and Recorded Arts (ALRA) was a British drama school. It had two sites: ALRA South on Wandsworth Common in south London and ALRA North in Wigan, Greater Manchester. It was founded in 1979 by director and actor Sorrel Carson who then directed the school as its principal until 2001. The last principal was Kieran Sheehan (acting). ALRA was a member of Drama UK, formerly the Conference of Drama Schools, and National Council for Drama Training, both organizations since dissolved, and received funding from the Young People's Learning Agency. It was a member of the Federation of Drama Schools. It was announced that ALRA was to close with effect from 4 April 2022. The University of Roehampton, London, formerly Roehampton Institute of Higher Education, is a public university in the United Kingdom, situated on three major sites in Roehampton, in the London Borough of Wandsworth. Paddington
Paddington is an area within the City of Westminster, in Central London. First a medieval parish then a metropolitan borough, it was integrated with Westminster and Greater London in 1965.
