Pentre Galar
Pentre Galar (or Pentregalar, Pentre-Galar) is a small settlement in the Preseli Hills, Preseli Mountains south of the village of Crymych, north Pembrokeshire, Wales, on the A478 road, A478 Cardigan, Ceredigion, Cardigan to Tenby road. The western part of the settlement lies in the parish of Mynachlog-ddu and the eastern part in Llanfyrnach parish. Name The English translation for ''pentre'' is village, and ''galar'' can mean mourning, sorrow or grief. The origin of this name is obscure. Geography The land slopes from Crugiau Dwy at a height of in the west down towards the valley of Afon Gafel, a tributary of the River Taf. Most of the terrain is above . Land use is agricultural, with a rectilinear field pattern. Minor roads connect Pentre Galar with the villages of Hermon, Pembrokeshire, Hermon, Glandwr, Pembrokeshire, Glandwr and Mynachlog-ddu, and most houses are alongside the main road. Mynachlog-ddu
Mynachlog-ddu () is a village, parish and Community (Wales), community in the Preseli Hills, Pembrokeshire, Wales. The community includes the parish of Llangolman. Origin of the name The Welsh placename means "black monastic grange": before the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the parish belonged to St Dogmaels Abbey. Geography Mynachlog-ddu sits on a plateau above sea level between Carn Menyn () and Foel Dyrch () in the Preseli Hills. History Mynachlog-ddu and the surrounding Preseli Hills, Preselis are rich in prehistoric remains. It is one of the possible sites of the Battle of Mynydd Carn in 1081. By c.1100 it was under the control of the Normans. Much has been unenclosed moorland since the Middle Ages, with few houses. Daniel John Davies
Daniel John Davies (2 September 1885 – 4 June 1970) was a Welsh Independent (Congregationalist) minister and Welsh language poet. He published under the name 'D.J. Davies' and was also well known as 'Davies Capel Als'. He was born in Waenfelen, a cottage in Pentre Galar near Crymych, in the Preseli Hills of North Pembrokeshire, the third son of John Morris Davies and his wife Ann. After his parents and his two brothers died while he was a child, he moved to Llanfyrnach to live with his mother's sister. He attended Glandŵr Independent chapel, Llanfyrnach, where, influenced by the minister, O. R. Owen, he began preaching himself on Whit Sunday 1906. He graduated in Hebrew from University College, Cardiff in 1913, then studied Theology at the Memorial College, Brecon. In 1916 he was ordained to the ministry at Capel Als, Llanelli. Thomas Evan Nicholas (6 October 1879 – 19 April 1971), who used the bardic name , was a Welsh language poet, preacher, radical, and champion of the disadvantaged of society. Early life Nicholas was born at ''Blaunwaun Felen'' in Llanfyrnach parish, Pembrokeshire, Wales, the fifth child of David (a small farmer and stonemason) and Elizabeth Nicholas. Before he was one year old, the family moved to 'Y Llety', Pentre Galar, a 57-acre smallholding on the slopes of Foel Dyrch in the Preseli Hills, Pembrokeshire, where Nicholas was brought up. Preseli Transmitting Station
The Preseli transmitting station (formerly spelt Presely) is a broadcasting and telecommunications facility on the eastern end of the Preseli Hills, Preseli Mountains, close to the villages of Crymych and Pentre Galar in Pembrokeshire, Wales (). It is owned and operated by Arqiva. It has a high Radio masts and towers#Steel lattice, guyed steel lattice mast. It was constructed in 1962 by the Independent Broadcasting Authority, IBA to transmit ITV Network, ITV 405-line television with transmissions commencing on Band III channel 8 from antennas at above sea level. The triangle of antenna arrays aimed beams of signal towards Pembrokeshire, another lobe was directed towards western Carmarthenshire and a northward beam covered south western Cardiganshire. The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales (RCAHMW; ; ), established in 1908, is a Welsh Government sponsored body concerned with some aspects of the archaeological, architectural and historic environment of Wales. Turnpike trusts were bodies set up by individual Acts of Parliament in the United Kingdom, Acts of Parliament, with powers to collect road toll road, tolls for maintaining the principal roads in Kingdom of Great Britain, Britain from the 17th but especially during the 18th and 19th centuries.
