Pentatonix Members
Pentatonix (abbreviated PTX) are an American a cappella group from Arlington, Texas, consisting of vocalists Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado, Matt Sallee, and Kevin Olusola. Characterized by their Pop music, pop-style arrangements with vocal harmonies, scat singing, riffing, vocal percussion, and beatboxing, they produce cover versions of modern pop works or Christmas music, Christmas songs, sometimes in the form of List of musical medleys, medleys, along with original material. Pentatonix was formed in 2011 and subsequently won the The Sing-Off (season 3), third season of NBC's ''The Sing-Off,'' receiving $200,000 and a recording contract with Sony Music Entertainment, Sony Music. ''PTX, Volume 1'' is the debut extended play album by the a cappella group Pentatonix. It was released on June 26, 2012. Conception and development After winning the title of champion in the reality show ''The Sing-Off'', Pentatonix was signed to a record label, enabling them to pursue their goal of a musical career. The group promoted their then-upcoming EP through YouTube videos with covers of pop songs such as "Somebody That I Used to Know" by Gotye featuring Kimbra, "Gangnam Style" by PSY, and "We Are Young" by Fun, which went viral. Reception The Gizzle Review gave the EP four stars out of five, praising the group by saying, "these new over songversions are exquisite - filled with tight harmonies, impressive riffing and plenty of vocal bells and whistles." The Sing-Off
''The Sing-Off'' is an American television singing competition featuring a cappella groups. It debuted on NBC on December 14, 2009, and was produced by Sony Pictures Television and Outlaw Productions, with Mark Burnett's One Three Media (for a time called United Artists Media Group) being added for the fourth season. A fifth season aired as a holiday special in December 2014. The Sing-Off (season 3)
The third season of ''The Sing-Off'' premiered on September 19, 2011. The number of a cappella groups was increased from 10 to 16, resulting in a new format. The show created two brackets, with only half the groups performing each week for the first few weeks. Nick Lachey stayed as host for the new season, as did Ben Folds and Shawn Stockman as judges. New to the judges' table was Sara Bareilles, who replaces Nicole Scherzinger, who left after 2 seasons to become a judge on ''The X Factor''. Deke Sharon returned as music director and vocal producer. The music staff included Ed Boyer, Ben Bram, Rob Dietz, and Christopher Diaz.
