Penrith Australian Football Club
The Penrith Australian Football Club is an Australian rules football club based in the western Sydney suburb of Penrith, which plays its home games at Greygums Oval, Cranebrook. It competes in the Sydney AFL competition, running in season 2024 Senior and Reserve grade open-age grade men's sides (in Division Two and Division Five respectively), as well as a women's AFL team (the Ramettes) competing in the Women's Division 2 competition. History 1981-86: Formation & Early Years 1981 The Penrith club was formed in 1981 at short notice from an idea principally from Keith Claxton, a prominent footballer then residing in the Penrith area. The Geelong guernsey was chosen as the club's strip and the "Rams" nickname adopted, in reference to the area's contribution to the early development of the wool industry in Australia. Cranebrook is a suburb of Greater Western Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia, and is located 50 km radially (65 km by road) WNW of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the City of Penrith. Cranebrook is part of the Greater Western Sydney region. History Cranebrook takes its name from a pioneer farmer, James McCarthy, who was granted 100 acres (400,000 m2) of land in 1804 and named it "Crane Brook farm", after the abundance of cranes in the area. The Greater Western Sydney Giants (officially the Greater Western Sydney Football Club and colloquially known as the GWS Giants or simply GWS or Giants) are a professional Australian rules football club based in Sydney Olympic Park which represents the Greater Western Sydney region of New South Wales. Michael Hartley (born 7 June 1993) is a professional Australian rules footballer who most recently played for the Hawthorn Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Early life An athletic youngster who excelled in a range of sports, including cricket, basketball and athletics but most notably high jump where he was ranked third in Australia at the age of 12. First played Australian Football as a fifteen-year-old for Penrith. He was signed by Collingwood as an NSW Scholarship player at the age of 16. Hartley was originally recruited to the club via the NSW Scholarship program in 2007. He represented NSW at the 2011 U18 National Championships, where he impressed Collingwood enough for them to Rookie listed him with selection No. 87 in the Rookie Draft.
