Pennsylvania Railroad Locomotive Classification
Locomotive classification on the Pennsylvania Railroad took several forms. Early on, steam locomotives were given single-letter classes. As the 26 letters were quickly assigned, that scheme was abandoned for a more complex system. This was used for all of the PRR's steam locomotives, and — with the exception of the final type bought (the E44) — all electric locomotives also used this scheme. PRR steam and electric classification A: 0-4-0 Class A was the 0-4-0 type, an arrangement best suited to small switcher locomotives (known as "shifters" in PRR parlance). Most railroads abandoned the 0-4-0 after the 1920s, but the PRR kept it for use on small industrial branches, especially those with street trackage and tight turns. * A1 * A2 * A3 * A4 * A5s * A6 B: 0-6-0 Class B comprised the 0-6-0 type, the most popular arrangement for switcher locomotives on the PRR. * B1 (Steam) * B1 (Electric) * B2 * B3 * B4 * B5 - Rebuilt from class H1 and H2a 2-8-0 ... PRR C1
The PRR C1 was the Pennsylvania Railroad's class of steam locomotive, used in switching service. The locomotive type was built at the railroad's Juniata shops in Altoona, Pennsylvania and introduced in 1925. The 0-8-0 was common on most railroads, but not on PRR; when the railroad needed larger motive power, they used the 2-8-0 "Consolidation". The PRR wanted the best motive power for switching duties at rail yard A rail yard, railway yard, railroad yard (US) or simply yard, is a series of Track (rail transport), tracks in a rail network for storing, sorting, or loading and unloading rail vehicles and locomotives. Yards have many tracks in parallel for k ...s and interchanges, and the C1 class was the heaviest two-cylinder 0-8-0 switcher ever produced. Calculated tractive effort was 76,154 lb, based on 78% MEP with 60% maximum cutoff. All C1s were withdrawn and scrapped between 1948 and 1953. 2-8-0
Under the Whyte notation for the classification of steam locomotives, represents the wheel arrangement of two leading wheels on one axle, usually in a leading truck, eight powered and coupled driving wheels on four axles, and no trailing wheels. In the United States and elsewhere, this wheel arrangement is commonly known as a Consolidation, after the Lehigh and Mahanoy Railroad’s ''Consolidation'', the name of the first 2-8-0.White, John H. Jr. (1968). ''A history of the American locomotive; its development: 1830-1880''. New York: Dover Publications, p. 65. The notation 2-8-0T indicates a tank locomotive of this wheel arrangement, the "T" suffix indicating a locomotive on which the water is carried in side-tanks mounted on the engine rather than in an attached tender (rail), tender. The Consolidation represented a notable advance in locomotive power. After 1875, it became "the most popular type of freight locomotive in the United States and was built in greater quantities tha ... 0-8-0
Under the Whyte notation for the classification of steam locomotives, represents the wheel arrangement of no leading wheels, eight powered and coupled driving wheels on four axles and no trailing wheels. Locomotives of this type are also referred to as eight coupled. Overview Examples of the 0-8-0 wheel arrangement were constructed both as tender locomotive, tender and tank locomotives. The earliest locomotives were built for mainline haulage, particularly for Freight rail transport, freight, but the configuration was later also often used for large switcher locomotives (shunter locomotives). The wheel arrangement provided a powerful layout with all engine weight as adhesive weight, which maximised the tractive effort and factor of adhesion. The layout was generally too large for smaller and lighter railways, where the more popular wheel arrangement would often be found performing similar duties. Usage Austria Two 0-8-0 locomotives were delivered from Elsässische Maschinenbau ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

PRR B28s
The USRA 0-6-0 was a USRA standard class of steam locomotive designed under the control of the United States Railroad Administration, the nationalized railroad system in the United States during World War I. This was the standard light switcher locomotive of the USRA types, and was of 0-6-0 wheel arrangement in the Whyte notation, or "C" in UIC classification. A total of 255 locomotives were built under USRA control; these were sent to the following railroads: After the dissolution of the USRA, the Atlantic Coast Line, Chicago, Burlington and Quincy, Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha Railway, Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad and Texas and Pacific Railway ordered additional copies of the USRA 0-6-0 design, while the Missouri Pacific Railroad and the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway ordered only copies. Preservation As of 2022, three USRA 0-6-0 copies are known to be preserved. Two are from the Wheeling and Lake Erie: 3960, which is awaiting a cosmetic restoration at the Ag ...
