Penitenziagite
Penitenziagite ("Do penance") is a rallying cry derived from the Latin "Poenitentiam agite," meaning the same. It has been also interpreted as a paraphrase of the Greek "πένητες διάγετε" attributed to Christ ("penites diagete"), meaning "live life as a pauper". The phrase was used by the Dulcinian movement founded by Gerard Segarelli (1240–1300) in the 13th century, a movement named after the disciple Fra Dolcino. The phrase is used in the novel ''The Name of the Rose'' by Umberto Eco and in the Jean-Jacques Annaud movie and also a miniseries of same name. It is also used by Guillermo del Toro as Pappy McPoyle in season 8, episode 3 of ''It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia'', "The Maureen Ponderosa Wedding Massacre". A sample of Ron Perlman's character from the 1986 movie ''The Name of the Rose'' saying the word appears in the song "Endemoniada", the first track on the album '' The Nephilim'', by the band Fields of the Nephilim. ''The Name of the Rose'' is a 1986 historical mystery film directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud, based on the 1980 novel of the same name by Umberto Eco. Sean Connery stars as the Franciscan friar William of Baskerville, called upon to solve a deadly mystery in a medieval abbey. Christian Slater portrays his young apprentice, Adso of Melk, and F. Poenitentiam Agite
The Latin term ''Poenitentiam agite'' is used in the first of the Ninety-Five Theses of Martin Luther, and variously translated into English as "Repent" or "Do Penance". The phrase was also used as a rallying cry by the Dulcinian movement and its predecessors, the Apostolic Brethren, two radical movements of the Medieval period. The term is part of the larger quotation from St. Jerome's Vulgate translation of Mt. 3:2 (as said by John the Baptist) and Mt. 4:17 (as repeated by Jesus of Nazareth): ''Pœnitentiam agite: appropinquavit enim regnum cælorum'' ("Repent: the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand"). The term is translated from the original Greek command μετανοεῖτε (English transliteration: "metanoeite"), which some post-Vulgate translators (including Erasmus) alternatively render in Latin as "resipiscite" – a translation that favors the connotation of changing one's internal state of mind, rather than the connotation of engaging in external penitential action. Penance
Penance is any act or a set of actions done out of repentance for sins committed, as well as an alternate name for the Catholic, Lutheran, Eastern Orthodox, and Oriental Orthodox sacrament of Reconciliation or Confession. It also plays a part in confession among Anglicans and Methodists, in which it is a rite, as well as among other Protestants. The word ''penance'' derives from Old French and Latin ''paenitentia'', both of which derive from the same root meaning repentance, the desire to be forgiven (in English see contrition). Penance and repentance, similar in their derivation and original sense, have come to symbolize conflicting views of the essence of repentance, arising from the controversy as to the respective merits of "faith" and " good works". Fields of the Nephilim are an English gothic rock band formed in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, in 1984. The band's name refers to a Biblical race of angel-human hybrids known as the Nephilim. Career Early years (1984–1991) Fields of the Nephilim's initial sound incorporated elements of hard rock, gothic rock, heavy metal and psychedelic rock, and comprised a bass- and guitar-driven sound underpinned by McCoy's growled vocals. Lyrically, the band incorporated themes concerning magic (specifically chaos magic), the Cthulhu Mythos, the Sumerian religion, and the works of Aleister Crowley. ''The Nephilim'' is the second studio album by Fields of the Nephilim, released in September 1988 by Situation Two/Beggars Banquet Records. The record debuted at number 12 in the UK album charts.
