Peninsular Spain
Peninsular Spain is the part of the territory of Spain located within the Iberian Peninsula, thus excluding other parts of Spain: the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands, Ceuta, Melilla, and several islets and crags off the coast of Morocco known collectively as ''plazas de soberanía'' (places of sovereignty). In Spain, it is mostly known simply as ''la Península''. It has land frontiers with France and Andorra to the north; Portugal to the west; and the British overseas territory of Gibraltar to the south. Characteristics Peninsular Spain has an area of 492,175 km2 and a population of 43,731,572. It contains 15 of the autonomous communities of Spain. Peninsular Spanish
Peninsular Spanish (), also known as the Spanish of Spain (), European Spanish (), or Iberian Spanish (), is the set of varieties of the Spanish language spoken in Peninsular Spain. This construct is often framed in opposition to varieties from the Americas and the Canary Islands. From a phonological standpoint, there is a north-south gradient contrasting conservative and innovative pronunciation patterns. The former generally retain features such as – distinction and realization of intervocalic /d/, whilst the latter may not. Processes of interaction and levelling between standard (a construct popularly perceived as based on northern dialects) and nonstandard varieties however involve ongoing adoption of conservative traits south and innovative ones north. In the context of the Spanish Empire, a ''peninsular'' (, pl. ''peninsulares'') was a Spaniard born in Spain residing in the New World, Spanish East Indies, or Spanish Guinea. In the context of the Portuguese Empire, ''reinóis'' (singular ''reinol'') were Portuguese people born in Portugal residing primarily in Portuguese America; children born in Brazil to two ''reinóis'' parents were known as ''mazombos''.
