Penedès () is a natural region, natural and historical region of Catalonia. It is located in the south of the autonomous community of Catalonia, Spain between the pre-coastal mountain range (''Serralada Pre-litoral'') and the Mediterranean Sea. The comarques of Catalonia, comarcal division of the Generalitat de Catalunya in 1936 and 1987, divided Penedès into three administrative comarques: Alt Penedès, Baix Penedès and Garraf, and their capitals are Vilafranca del Penedès, el Vendrell and Vilanova i la Geltrú. Vilafranca Del Penedès
Vilafranca del Penedès, or simply Vilafranca, is the capital of Alt Penedès county in Penedès, Catalonia, Spain. It is situated in the Penedès Depression on the left bank of the Foix River, and on the main axis of communication from Barcelona to Tarragona and Valencia, served by a Rodalies Barcelona line 4 and by the AP-7 '' autopista'' as well as by the C-243 towards Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, and C-15 (formerly called C-244) roads to Vilanova i la Geltrú and Igualada respectively. History The town was founded in the middle of the 12th century as a result of the decline of Olèrdola, which had been until then the main local centre. Baix Penedès
Baix Penedès () is a comarca in the Penedès region, in Catalonia, Spain. The area has been settled since the times of the Iberians, with ancient ruins remaining in Banyeres at ''Can Canyís'', at the village of ''Guàrdies'' and in Calafell at the villages of ''Toixoneres'' and ''la Ciutadella'' ("The Citadel"). The comarques of Catalonia (singular ''comarca'', , ), often referred to in English as counties, are an Subdivisions of Catalonia, administrative division of Catalonia. Vegueria
A ''vegueria'' (), plural ', is the highest-level Subdivisions of Catalonia, regional division of Catalonia. Each vegueria is further divided into ''Comarques of Catalonia, comarques'' and Municipality, municipalities. As of 2025, the divides the territory into eight vegueries. The autonomous Val d'Aran, Aran Valley, considered a "unique territorial entity", is not part of any of vegueria. Olèrdola
Olèrdola () is a municipality in the ''comarca'' of the Alt Penedès in Catalonia, Spain. It is situated on the northern side of the Garraf massif, and the highest point of the municipality is the '' Puig de l'Àliga'' at 468 m. Olèrdola castle controlled the area of the Penedès Depression in the Early Middle Ages, reaching the height of its significance when its castle dominated the region under the control of the rebellious Mir Geribert, "Prince of Olèrdola". Its importance declined from the twelfth century and its administrative role was taken by Vilafranca del Penedès. The territory has been inhabited since the Neolithic period, and Iberic and Roman remains are juxtaposed with the ruins of the castle.
