Penarth ( , ) is a town and Community (Wales), community in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, approximately south of Cardiff city centre on the west shore of the Severn Estuary at the southern end of Cardiff Bay. Penarth is a Seaside resort#British seaside resorts, seaside resort in the Cardiff Urban Area, and the second largest town in the Vale of Glamorgan, next only to the administrative centre of Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, Barry. During the Victorian era Penarth was a highly popular holiday destination, promoted nationally as "The Garden by the Sea" and was packed by visitors from the English Midlands, Midlands and the West Country as well as day trippers from the South Wales valleys, mostly arriving by train. Cardiff South and Penarth () is a constituency of the Senedd. It elects one Member of the Senedd by the first past the post electoral system. It is typically a safe Labour seat. Constituency profile and voting The constituency was created for the first election to the Assembly, in 1999, with the name and boundaries of the Cardiff South and Penarth Westminster constituency. It is entirely within the preserved county of South Glamorgan. The only major boundary changes that have occurred in recent years is the inclusion of the ward of Sully into the constituency for the 2007 National Assembly for Wales election. Cardiff South and Penarth is part of the South Wales Central electoral region.
