Pembroke Daily Observer
The ''Pembroke Daily Observer'' is a digital newspaper serving the city of Pembroke, Ontario, Canada, and the nearby town of Petawawa. It was founded in 1855 and is now owned by Postmedia. As a broadsheet daily newspaper, it had a circulation of about 6,000 in recent years. It is the oldest continuous business enterprise in Pembroke. It has gone through many names over the years, including ''The Bulletin'', ''The Standard'', ''The Standard-Observer'', ''The Pembroke Observer'' and now ''The Daily Observer''. Pembroke ( ) is a city in the Canadian province of Ontario at the confluence of the Muskrat River (Ontario), Muskrat River and the Ottawa River in the Ottawa Valley, northwest of Ottawa. Though containing the administrative headquarters of Renfrew County, it is an independent city. History The first European settler to the area now known as Pembroke was Daniel Fraser in 1823, who squatted on land that was discovered to have been granted to a man named Abel Ward. Ward later sold the land (where Moncion's Metro Supermarket is located) to Fraser, and nearby Fraser Street is named after the family. Peter White (Canadian politician), Peter White, a veteran of the Royal Navy arrived in 1828, squatting beside Fraser on the land where Dairy Queen is now located. Petawawa ( ) is a town located in the eastern portion of Southern Ontario, Canada. Situated in the Ottawa Valley, with a population of 18,160 (2021 Census), Petawawa is the most populous municipality in Renfrew County. History The earliest settlement in the Petawawa area was inhabited by the Algonquin First Nation. The name of Petawawa originates from a local Algonquin language word, ''biidaawewe'', meaning "where one hears a noise like this".
