Dietrich Peltz (9 June 1914 – 10 August 2001) was a German World War II Luftwaffe bomber pilot and youngest general of the Wehrmacht. As a pilot he flew approximately 320 combat missions, including roughly 130 as a bomber pilot on the Eastern Front, 90 as a bomber pilot on the Western Front, and 102 as a dive bomber pilot during the invasion of Poland and Battle of France. Born in Gera, Peltz joined the Reichswehr, later renamed the Wehrmacht, of Nazi Germany in 1934. Initially serving in the '' Heer'' (Army), he transferred to the Luftwaffe (Air Force) in 1935. He flew combat missions over Poland and France as a dive bomber pilot. He then converted to the Junkers Ju 88 bomber and was assigned to ''Kampfgeschwader'' 77 (KG 77—77th Bomber Wing). Philip "Peter" Peltz (1915 – March 20, 2001) was an American artist, active in Sandwich on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. He was known for his wooden, painted carvings of birds mounted on driftwood. Life and work Peltz was born in Albany, New York in 1915. He attended the Hotchkiss School, and graduated from Yale University in 1938, later returning to Yale to earn a Master of Arts degree in history. During his time at the university, Peltz was a member of the Whiffenpoofs singing group. Peltz served in the US Navy during World War II, in both the Mediterranean and Pacific theaters, rising to the rank of lieutenant. It was during his time in the Navy that he carved his first bird. John Peltz (April 23, 1861 – February 27, 1906) was a professional baseball player in the 19th century. Peltz first played with the Indianapolis Hoosiers, in 1884 at the age of 23. He batted .219 and surrendered 38 errors in the outfield. Peltz did not appear in major league baseball until 1890, except for a brief one-game appearance in 1888 with the Baltimore Orioles. In 1890, his last year in the major leagues, he played with three teams, the Brooklyn Gladiators, Syracuse Stars, and the Toledo Maumees. He would continue to play with various minor league clubs until 1893, retiring with the Montgomery Colts. Peltz had a career batting average of .224. Mary Ellis Peltz (4 May 1896 – 24 October 1981) was an American drama and music critic, magazine editor, poet and writer on music. Born Mary Ellis Opdycke, Peltz was educated at the Spence School and Barnard College (Phi Beta Kappa). At the age of 24 she joined the staff of ''The New York Sun'' as assistant music critic. She left the paper in 1924 at the time of her marriage to John DeWitt Peltz. She later worked for ''The Junior League Magazine'' as a drama critic and published both poetry and articles in a variety of publications; including ''Harper's Magazine'' and ''Poetry''. In 1936 she became the first chief editor of ''Opera News'', a position she held until 1957 when she founded the Metropolitan Opera's archives.
