Peltigera
''Peltigera'' is a genus of approximately 100 species of foliose lichens in the family Peltigeraceae. Commonly known as the dog or pelt lichens, species of ''Peltigera'' are often terricolous (growing on soil), but can also occur on moss, trees, rocks, and many other in many parts of the world. Most species of ''Peltigera'' have the cyanobacterium ''Nostoc'' as the dominant photobiont but some have the algae '' Coccomyxa.'' The presence of both a green alga and a cyanobacterium makes some tripartite; in this case they show cephalodium growths containing the third partner, ''Nostoc''. Because of their ability to fix nitrogen from the atmosphere, such lichens are influential in soil composition and generation. Lichens Of North America
Irwin Murray Brodo (born November 7, 1935 in New York City) is an emeritus scientist at the Canadian Museum of Nature, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He is an authority on the identification and biology of lichens. Early life and education Brodo grew up in the Bronx and attended City College in Manhattan as an undergraduate. He went on to do his graduate studies at Columbia University, and received a master's degree from Cornell University. He earned a Ph.D. in lichenology under the supervision of Henry Imshaug at Michigan State University. Career and research In 1965, Brodo was hired by the National Museum of Canada (now the Canadian Museum of Nature), where he continues to work as a research scientist emeritus. Over his career, he has built the lichen collection (CANL) into one of the best in North America. Johann Christian Gottlob Baumgarten
Johann Christian Gottlob Baumgarten (7 April 1765 – 29 December 1843) was a German physician and botanist who was a native of Luckau (Niederlausitz), Luckau in Lower Lusatia. He studied at the medical-surgical college in Dresden and at the University of Leipzig (from 1785), where he was a student of Johann Ehrenfried Pohl. While at Leipzig he performed field studies of its local flora, publishing the treatise "''Flora Lipsiensis''" in 1790. The same year he earned his philosophy degree, and in 1791 received his medical doctorate. Afterwards he furthered his studies of botany and medicine in Vienna. In 1793 he travelled to Transylvania, where he undertook pioneer investigations of its flora. In 1794, he was named district medical officer in Nocrich, Leschkirch, and from 1801, performed a similar role in Schäßburg (today known as Sighişoara, Romania). William Hudson (botanist)
William Hudson Fellow of the Royal Society, FRS (1730 in Kendal – 23 May 1793) was a British botanist and apothecary based in London. His main work was ''Flora Anglica'', published in 1762. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1761. Life and work Hudson was born between 1730 and 1732 at the White Lion Inn, Kendal, which was kept by his father. He was educated at Kirkbie Kendal School, Kendal grammar school, Hudson was subsequently apprenticed to an apothecary in London. He obtained the prize for botany given by the Apothecaries' Company which was a copy of John Ray, Ray's ''Synopsis''.
