Andries Pels
Andries Pels (2 September 1655, in Amsterdam – 8 February 1731) was a wealthy Dutch banker and insurer. He began as someone who had devoted himself to the merchandise trade, along with his brother Guillelmo, but after the latter's death in 1705 he concentrated more and more on the money and exchange business. In 1707, he founded the firm Andries Pels & Sons, the largest merchant bank of the day, that lasted until 1774. The firm traded in sugar, tobacco, cocoa, rice, rye, salt and hemp, but also financed salvages of stranded ships. After the foundation of St. Peterburg, Pels had ships loaded at Kronstadt with grain, linseed, tallow, potash, and tar, as well as rhubarb. Between December 1712 and March 1714, James Brydges, 1st Duke of Chandos, James Brydges, paymaster of the Forces, conducted transactions through Pels' account with a total value of more than half a million guilders. Gerrit Pels
Gerrit Pels (1893–1966) was a Dutch astronomer, a lifelong member of the scientific staff of the Leiden Observatory. He was born in Woerden. After following secondary school in Utrecht, he was appointed "computer" at the Leiden observatory in 1919. Starting circa 1924, he studied Jupiter's Galilean satellites, minor planets, comets, and the proper motions of faint stars, in particular members of the Hyades cluster. He computed orbital characteristics for many of the minor planets discovered by Hendrik van Gent. Jessica Giles (formerly Pels) (born September 6, 1986) is the former editor-in-chief of ''Cosmopolitan'' magazine. She served as digital director for marieclaire.com from 2014 until 2018, when she became digital director and later that year the chief editor of ''Cosmopolitan''. Pels Rijcken
Gerhard Christiaan Coenraad (Gerrit) Pels Rijcken (10 January 1810 – 2 May 1889) was a career officer of the Royal Dutch Navy and a politician. As an officer, Pels Rijcken reached the rank of Vice-Admiral. He was Dutch Navy Minister from 1866 to 1868. Biography Pels Rijcken was born in Princenhage, Netherlands, where his father was sheriff as well as an alderman of nearby Breda. His brother later became mayor of Arnhem (1874-1844). He entered the Royal Dutch Navy, becoming a midshipman in 1826, and rose through the ranks by serving on several vessels. He became a lieutenant, 2nd class in April 1831 and was promoted to lieutenant, 1st class in December 1845. He served as a training officer at the KIM (Royal Naval Institute) in Medemblik from 1847. New Orleans Pelicans (baseball)
The New Orleans Pelicans or "Pels" were a minor league professional baseball team based in New Orleans, Louisiana. History Founded in 1865 as an amateur social/sporting organization, the Pelicans became a professional franchise when they joined the Southern League in 1887. That league operated off and on until it finally folded in 1899. During that time the team captured three pennants: 1887, 1889, and 1896. The Pelicans then became a founding member of the Southern Association in 1901. From 1887 to 1900, the team played at Sportsman's Park/ Crescent City Base Ball Park located at the foot of Canal Street near the New Basin Canal (now the Pontchartrain Expressway).
