Pelham High School is a public high school located in Pelham, Alabama. Though formerly part of the Shelby County School System, it has been part of the Pelham City Schools System since 2014. Pelham High School was built in 1973 and opened in 1974. The school's mascot is "Paws" the Panther, and its colors are Forest Green and Vegas Gold. History The school was built in 1973 and opened in 1974 with the first graduating class in 1978. Since then, the school has experienced tremendous growth requiring several major additions and renovations to the campus. During the 1994 Palm Sunday tornado outbreak an F2 tornado struck on Highway 261 causing damage to the school, as well as some business buildings in Pelham. Pelham is a city in Shelby County, Alabama, United States. The population was 24,318 at the 2020 census, It incorporated on July 10, 1964 and is a suburb located in the Birmingham metropolitan area, Alabama which was home to nearly 1.2 million residents as of the 2020 census. Vestavia Hills High School (VHHS), founded in 1970, is a public high school in Vestavia Hills, Alabama, a suburb of Birmingham, Alabama, United States. It is part of the Vestavia Hills City Schools. A number of teachers in the school are Nationally Board Certified, and two are nationally recognized James Madison Scholars. History The land was acquired by Louis Pizitz, a Polish immigrant who settled in Birmingham in 1889. Pizitz lived here with his wife, Minnie and their son, Hortense. After their death, their son Hortense sold the land to the City of Vestavia Hills in the 1960s. The school was built in the 1970s, in the context of the establishment of segregation academies in the 1970s, which enabled white children to segregate themselves from black children, who remained in public schools. Within Reason is an American rock band from Birmingham, Alabama, whose founding members include Chris Dow and David Koonce. The band was formed in 2005. Mastodon is an American Heavy metal music, heavy metal band from Atlanta, Georgia. Formed in 2000, the band's lineup of Troy Sanders (bass/vocals), Brent Hinds (lead guitar/vocals), Bill Kelliher (rhythm guitar/backing vocals) and Brann Dailor (drums/vocals) remained unchanged for 24 years, until Hinds's departure in March 2025. Brent Hinds
William Brent Hinds (born January 16, 1974) is an American musician best known as the former lead guitarist of the Atlanta, Georgia heavy metal band Mastodon, in which he shared guitar duties with Bill Kelliher and vocal duties with Troy Sanders and Brann Dailor. Hinds is also lead guitarist/singer for the surfabilly band Fiend Without a Face, and is involved in other projects, including classic rock bands The Blood Vessels, West End Motel, Four Hour Fogger, The Last of the Blue Eyed Devils, Giraffe Tongue Orchestra, and Legend of the Seagullmen. Deidre Downs Gunn (born July 7, 1980) is an American physician and former beauty pageant titleholder. Downs was Miss Alabama 2004 and later was crowned Miss America 2005. Education After graduating from Pelham High School in 1998, Downs attended the University of Virginia on a volleyball scholarship. While at the University of Virginia, she was an Echols Scholar and a member of the Jefferson Literary and Debating Society. After her freshman year of college at the University of Virginia, Downs chose to focus on her studies and aspiration to go to medical school and ultimately transferred to Samford University.
