''Peking Man'' is the only studio album by New Zealand new wave band Peking Man. Released in early July 1986 by CBS Records International, the album, produced by Bruce Lynch, had numerous successes in New Zealand. Retrieved 9 April 2022 froDiscogs These included 8 award wins at the 1986 New Zealand Music Awards and a peak of No. 6 on the country's charts. It remains the band's only studio album as vocalist Margaret Urlich left the group to begin a solo career mere months after its release. Background and development In 1983, Peking Man released their first EP, the four-track ''Animal Instincts''. At the time, the band consisted of drummer John Fearon, saxophonist Neville Hall, bassist Tim Calder, vocalist Pat Urlich, and guitarist Perry Marshall. CBS Records International was the international arm of the Columbia Records unit of Columbia Broadcasting System, Inc. ( CBS) formed in 1961 and launched in 1962. Previously, Columbia Records had licensed other record companies to manufacture and distribute Columbia recordings outside North America, such as Philips Records and its subsidiary Fontana (now part of the Universal Music Group) in Europe. Bruce Lynch
Bruce Lynch (born 1 June 1948, in New Zealand) is an electric and acoustic bassist, producer and arranger. Music career Arriving in the UK in the mid-1970s, Lynch became a commercially successful session musician, touring extensively with Cat Stevens, including Stevens's 1976 Earth Tour as a sideman that was recorded as the album/DVD, '' Majikat'', released in 2004; he appeared on six of Steven's albums. His wife Suzanne Lynch sang backing vocals for much of this time. He also recorded on two albums for Richard Thompson, and an album with Rick Wakeman as well as on Chris Rea's 1980 album ''Tennis'' and on Kate Bush's debut album. While in the UK, he was also an early member of British jazz fusion band Morrissey–Mullen, together with fellow New Zealand session musician Frank Gibson, Jr. on drums. The song was included on Peking Man's self-titled album. The song was written by band saxophone player Neville Hall and features lead vocals from Margaret Urlich, with Pat Urlich on backing vocals. Peking Man (''Homo erectus pekinensis'', originally "''Sinanthropus pekinensis''") is a subspecies of '' H. erectus'' which inhabited what is now northern China during the Middle Pleistocene. Its fossils have been found in a cave some southwest of Beijing (referred to in the West as Peking upon its first discovery), known as the Zhoukoudian Peking Man Site. The first fossil, a tooth, was discovered in 1921, and Zhoukoudian has since become the most productive ''H. erectus'' site in the world. Peking Man was instrumental in the foundation of Chinese anthropology, and fostered an important dialogue between Western and Eastern science. Margaret Mary Urlich (24 January 1965 – 22 August 2022) was a New Zealand singer who lived in Australia for most of her career. Urlich's 1989 debut solo studio album, ''Safety in Numbers'', won " Breakthrough Artist – Album" at the 1991 ARIA Awards. Its 1992 follow-up, '' Chameleon Dreams'', was also a success. Urlich was successful in both New Zealand and Australia, selling over 400,000 albums during her career, ranking her as one of New Zealand's most successful recording artists. Founded in the early 1970s, Mandrill Studios was a recording studio in Parnell, a suburb of Auckland, New Zealand. Many of New Zealand's prominent artists had their work recorded there.
