Pehr Philander
Johan Pehr Gustav Philander, also known as ''Javanen'' (''The Javan'' in Swedish) was a gardener and former Dutch slave from the island of Nias. He was bought in Canton and adopted by Carl Gustaf Ekeberg, who took him to Sweden, where he became free, slavery having no legality in Sweden. Early life and enslavement Pehr Philander was born circa 1757 on the island Nias off the coast of Sumatra. At a young age, Philander was kidnapped and Enslaved by members of the Dutch East India Company. Along with two other boys, he was brought by the Dutch to Canton in China. The boys were brought to a market in Canton where they were being sold as "three Malay-boys". The Dutch supposedly nailed the boys' earlobes to the ships' chests, which meant that Philander carried a scar on his ear for the rest of his life. Nias
Nias (, Nias: ''Tanö Niha'') is an island located off the western coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. Nias is also the name of the archipelago () of which the island is the centre, but also includes the Batu Islands to the southeast and the small Hinako Islands to the west. Joseph Pierce (soldier)
Joseph Pierce (1842January 3, 1916) was a Chinese born American soldier who fought in the 14th Connecticut Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War and reached the rank of corporal. After the war, he returned to Connecticut and worked as a silver engraver until his death in 1916. Biography Joseph Pierce was born in Guangdong Province, China, in 1842, though the exact date of his birth is unclear. Amos Peck, an American ship captain from Berlin, Connecticut, brought Pierce to the United States in 1853. There are several versions of stories describing how Pierce arrived in the United States from China. One suggests that Pierce's father sold him for six dollars, while another indicates that Pierce's brother sold him for 50 to 60 dollars. Gustav Badin
Adolf Ludvig Gustav Fredrik Albert Badin (né Couchi; 1747 or 1750 – 1822), known as Badin, was a Swedish court servant (Kammermohr) and diarist. Originally a slave, he was the foster son and servant of Queen Louisa Ulrika of Sweden and a servant to his foster sister Princess Sophia Albertine of Sweden. His original name was Couchi, but he was commonly known as ''Badin'' ('mischief-maker' or 'trickster'). Early life The date of his birth is not confirmed. 1747 is a traditional year of his birth, but within the court and the Timmerman Order, the year was registered as 1750, and this is considered more correct by modern historians. Badin was born either in Africa or in the Danish island Saint Croix. He himself said that the only thing he remembered about his past was his parents' hut burning, but it is not known whether this happened in Africa or in Saint Croix.
