Pee Dee River Railway
The Pee Dee River Railway is a South Carolina railroad that serves the far eastern portion of the state. The Aberdeen and Rockfish Railroad established the Pee Dee River Railway between McColl, South Carolina, and Bennettsville, South Carolina, in 1987. The line operated by the Pee Dee River Railway was begun in 1884 by the South Carolina Pacific Railway, a South Carolina railroad chartered in 1882. It was leased to the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railway Company beginning in 1884. The Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley was placed in receivership in 1894 and for several decades ownership of the carrier changed hands repeatedly, until a North Carolina Supreme Court decision in 1924. The southern routes of the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley, including the South Carolina Pacific, went to the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. Aberdeen And Rockfish Railroad
The Aberdeen and Rockfish Railroad is a short-line railroad operating in North Carolina, United States. At one time, the AR was a Class 2 railroad. The railroad has of track between Aberdeen and Fayetteville, North Carolina. History The AR was incorporated in 1892 by businessman John Blue. He built the railroad to get his timber and turpentine products to market. On June 30, 1895, the first line was opened between Aberdeen and Endon. In 1898, the company added a line from Ashley Heights to Raeford which soon became the main line with the Endon line as a branch. Shortly thereafter, the Endon branch was extended to Juniper. The main line was extended to Dundarrach in 1900, Rockfish in 1902, Fenix in 1904, and a branch from Rockfish to Hope Mills was added in 1905. McColl, South Carolina
McColl is a town in Marlboro County, South Carolina, United States. It lies in the state's Pee Dee region, from the North Carolina border. The population was 2,174 at the 2010 census. McColl is the home of the Pee Dee Indian Tribe. They are a relatively small American Indian tribe that has occupied the Pee Dee region for several centuries. While they received state recognition from the Government of South Carolina just after the beginning of the 21st Century, they have been seeking federal acknowledgment since 1976. While today the tribe consists of just over 200 enrolled members, they were once a significant cultural and political power in the region. Bennettsville is a city located in the U.S. state of South Carolina on the Great Pee Dee River. South Carolina Pacific Railway
The South Carolina Pacific Railway was a shortline railroad operation that existed in eastern South Carolina in the late 19th century and much of the 20th century. The line was chartered in 1882 and completed in 1884. It ran 10.5 miles from Bennettsville, South Carolina, east to the border with North Carolina. It was leased to the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railway Company beginning in 1884. In January 1885, a 30-year lease went into effect in which the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley paid $12,000 annually, covered the interest on bonds taken out by the South Carolina Pacific (nearly $6,300 a year) and agreed to pay for maintenance of the line. At this point, the board of the South Carolina Pacific resigned, as agreed, and the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley's directors took over. The Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railway was a Southeastern railroad that operated in the Carolinas immediately after Reconstruction era of the United States, Reconstruction. It ran from Mount Airy, North Carolina, southeast through Greensboro, North Carolina, Greensboro and Fayetteville, North Carolina, Fayetteville to the Atlantic port of Wilmington, North Carolina. A significant branch also ran from Fayetteville south to Bennettsville, South Carolina. Atlantic Coast Line Railroad
The Atlantic Coast Line Railroad was a United States Class I railroad formed in 1900, though predecessor railroads had used the ACL brand since 1871. In 1967, it merged with long-time rival Seaboard Air Line Railroad to form the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad. Much of the original ACL network has been part of CSX Transportation since 1986. The Atlantic Coast Line served the Southeastern United States, Southeast, with a concentration of lines in Florida. Numerous named passenger trains were operated by the railroad for Florida-bound tourists, with the Atlantic Coast Line contributing significantly to Florida's economic development in the first half of the 20th century.
