Pedro Yan Shiqi
Yan Shiqi (顏思齊) (1586 – September 1625), courtesy name Zhenquan (振泉), was a native of Haicheng, Zhangzhou. He was a tailor, fugitive, armed maritime merchant and also known as the "King of Pioneer Taiwan" (開台王). He may have also been known to Dutch authorities as Pedro China. Life Early childhood There are no surviving biographies of Yan Shiqi and most surviving information about his early life comes from the somewhat unreliable "Taiwan Foreign Records" ( :zh:臺灣外記) by the little known Qing Dynasty historian Jiang Ri Sheng ( :zh:江日昇). Because records of his early life are similar to those of the Chinese pirate Li Dan, some academics have questioned whether Yan Shiqi even existed. Haicheng, Fujian
Haicheng () is a town of Longhai City, Fujian, China. , it has 5 residential communities and 19 villages under its administration. History Haicheng used to be known as Yuegang ( "Moon Harbor") for its crescent-shaped shoreline. It was a bustling port during the Ming dynasty even under the sea ban (''haijin'') which prohibited private maritime trade. Fujian (; alternately romanized as Fukien or Hokkien) is a province on the southeastern coast of China. Beigang, Hokkō or Peikang is an urban township in Yunlin County, Taiwan. It is primarily known for its Chaotian Temple, one of the most prominent Temples of Mazu on Taiwan. Li Dan (magnate)
Li Dan (; Christian name: Andrea Dittis; died 1625) was a Chinese merchant and pirate. He was a prominent early 17th century Chinese merchant and political figure, originally from Quanzhou in Fujian province. Li operated out of Manila for a time before moving to Hirado, in Japan and becoming a part of the '' shuinsen'' trade, with a formal vermillion seal license from the Tokugawa shogunate. He served as head of the Chinese community in Hirado, and maintained a residence in the English sector of the city. Kingdom Of Tungning
The Kingdom of Tungning (), also known as Tywan by the British at the time, was a dynastic maritime state that ruled part of southwestern Taiwan and the Penghu islands between 1661 and 1683. It is the first predominantly Han Chinese state in Taiwanese history. At its zenith, the kingdom's maritime power dominated varying extents of coastal regions of southeastern China and controlled the major sea lanes across both China Seas, and its vast trade network stretched from Japan to Southeast Asia. Koxinga
Zheng Chenggong, Prince of Yanping (; 27 August 1624 – 23 June 1662), better known internationally as Koxinga (), was a Ming loyalist general who resisted the Qing conquest of China in the 17th century, fighting them on China's southeastern coast. Zheng Zhilong, Marquis of Tong'an and Nan'an (; April 16, 1604 – November 24, 1661), baptismal name Nicholas Iquan Gaspard, was a Chinese admiral, merchant, military general, pirate, and politician of the late Ming dynasty who later defected to the Qing dynasty. He was from Nan'an County in Fujian province of China.
