Peach Public Libraries
The Peach Public Libraries is a consortium of two public libraries in central Georgia, serving Peach County. Its headquarters is the Thomas Public Library in Fort Valley. PPL is a member of PINES, a program of the Georgia Public Library Service covering 53 library systems in 143 counties; all residents in PINES-supported library systems have access to its combined collection of approximately 10.6 million books. PPL is serviced by GALILEO (GeorgiA LIbrary LEarning Online), a program of the University System of Georgia that offers access to over 100 databases indexing thousands of periodicals and scholarly journals. It also maintains over 10,000 journal titles in full text. Peach County, Georgia
Peach County is a county located in the central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 27,695. Its county seat is Fort Valley. Founded in 1924, it is the state's newest county, taken from Houston and Macon counties on July 18 of that year. Its namesake is the peach on account of it being located in a peach-growing district. Peach County is included in the Warner Robins, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is included in the Macon-Warner Robins, GA Combined Statistical Area. Fort Valley, Georgia
Fort Valley is a city in and the county seat of Peach County, Georgia, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 8,780. The city is in the Warner Robins metropolitan area and the Macon–Warner Robins combined statistical area. History The town's name is a mystery, as it has never had a fort. Historians believe that the name was mistakenly changed in a transcription error when the post office was named; the area was originally thought to have been called Fox Valley. Founded in 1836, Fort Valley was incorporated as a town in 1854 and as a city in 1907. In 1924 it was the designated seat of the newly formed Peach County. Public Information Network For Electronic Services
The Public Information Network for Electronic Services (or PINES) is the nearly statewide library consortium and its online library catalog of the Georgia Public Library Service. By June 2017, the catalog consisted of books from 284 library facilities in 143 counties across the U.S. state of Georgia with a collection size of 10.6 million items, all of which are searchable by anyone with a PINES library card which can be obtained free of charge from any PINES-participating library. The PINES system effectively turns most of the state of Georgia into one huge library. PINES cardholders are able to request an interlibrary loan from any affiliated library, and the single statewide library card grants access to the hundreds of branches associated with the service. The Georgia Public Library Service (GPLS) is the state agency for libraries in the U.S. State of Georgia and a unit of the University System of Georgia. Works Progress Administration
The Works Progress Administration (WPA; renamed in 1939 as the Work Projects Administration) was an American New Deal agency that employed millions of jobseekers (mostly men who were not formally educated) to carry out public works projects, including the construction of public buildings and roads. Byron, Georgia
Byron is a city located primarily in Peach County, Georgia, United States. A small portion of the city also extends into parts of Houston and Crawford counties. The population was estimated to be 5,149 in 2019 by the Census Bureau, an increasing of 14.1% from 4,512 at the 2010 census. The city is in the Warner Robins, GA, metropolitan area. Byron was home to the Middle Georgia Raceway, an auto racetrack that hosted NASCAR races and the filming of TV commercials and a feature movie. Middle Georgia Regional Library System
The Middle Georgia Regional Library System is a library system which serves the counties of Bibb, Crawford, Jones, Macon, Twiggs and Wilkinson in the U.S. state of Georgia. Patrons receive a PINES library card. This may be used at any of the 275 libraries affiliated with the program across Georgia, as well as the 14 branches in the Middle Georgia Regional Library System, and is open to all Georgian residents. History Carnegie Library The first request for a Carnegie library was sent by a Montezuma citizen by the name of E. B. Lewis in 1906. Blueprints sent along with the petition were modeled very similarly to the Carnegie building constructed one year earlier in Albany.
