Paya Terubong
Paya Terubong is a suburb of George Town, Penang, George Town in the States and federal territories of Malaysia, Malaysian state of Penang. Located nearly southwest of the Central George Town, Penang, city centre, it is nestled within the central valleys of Penang Island and south of Air Itam. Originally an agricultural village, rapid development in the last decades of the 20th century has transformed the area into a residential suburb. Etymology Paya Terubong was named after a species of grass known in Malay language, Malay as ''terubong''. Its scientific name is ''Cyrtococcum oxyphyllum''. Sungai Nibong
Sungai Nibong is a residential neighbourhood within the city of George Town in the Malaysian state of Penang. It lies near the eastern coast of Penang Island, about south of the city centre. Sungai Nibong is best known as the site of the annual Penang Island Festival, more popularly called Pesta Pulau Pinang''' in Malay. Batu Uban
Batu Uban is a residential neighbourhood within the city of George Town in the Malaysian state of Penang, about south of the city centre. Founded by ethnic Minangkabaus in the early 18th century, Batu Uban is regarded as the oldest Malay settlement on Penang Island. Since the late 20th century, Batu Uban has been significantly urbanised, with residential high-rises now dotting the neighbourhood. Etymology Batu Uban means grey hair rock in Malay. The area was said to have been named after a sea boulder, which was covered in dried grass, off the coast of what is now Batu Uban; this grassy rock resembled white hair from afar. Sungai Dua is a residential neighbourhood within the city of George Town in the Malaysian state of Penang. Located south of the city centre, this neighbourhood borders Universiti Sains Malaysia to the north, Sungai Nibong to the east and Bukit Jambul to the west. Etymology Sungai Dua is named after an eponymous river, Sungai Dua, which runs through the area. Bukit Jambul
Bukit Jambul is a neighbourhood of George Town, Penang, George Town in the States and federal territories of Malaysia, Malaysian state of Penang. Located south of the Central George Town, Penang, city centre, Bukit Jambul lies within the suburb of Paya Terubong, between Relau, Bayan Baru, Sungai Dua and Sungai Nibong. Transportation Rapid Penang bus routes 301 and 306 include stops within the neighbourhood of Bukit Jambul. These routes connect the neighbourhood with various destinations within the city, including the Penang International Airport. Jerejak Island
Jerejak Island is a islet off the eastern coast of Penang Island in the Malaysian state of Penang. It is also a short ferry ride from Bayan Lepas, a suburb of George Town. It was formerly the main leper asylum for the Straits Settlements (1868), a Quarantine Station (1875) and a penal colony (1969). History Francis Light, the founder of Penang, was said to have arrived in Jerejak Island in early 1786 before heading on to Penang. In 1797, Colonel Arthur Wellesley had proposed Jerejak as the possible site for Fort Cornwallis. His idea of establishing a military post in Jerejak was to offer protection to a new township called Jamestown, which was to be set up in present-day Bayan Lepas. Earlier in 1794, there had been an outbreak of malaria caused most likely by the clearing of the jungle to establish George Town, claiming many lives, including Francis Light himself. Located southwest of the city centre, the township was created in the 1980s. Ayer Itam is a suburb of George Town in the Malaysian state of Penang. Nested within the central valleys of Penang Island, it is located approximately southwest of the city centre.
