''Pavo'' is a genus of two species in the pheasant family. The two species, along with the Congo peafowl, are known as peafowl. Taxonomy The genus ''Pavo'' was introduced in 1758 by the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus in the tenth edition of his ''Systema Naturae''. The genus name is the Latin word for a peacock. The type species is the Indian peafowl (''Pavo cristatus''). Species The genus contains two species. Pavo is a constellation in the Southern Celestial Hemisphere, southern sky whose name is Latin for . Pavo first appeared on a 35-cm (14 in) diameter celestial globe published in 1598 in Amsterdam by Petrus Plancius and Jodocus Hondius and was depicted in Johann Bayer's star atlas ''Uranometria'' of 1603, and was likely conceived by Plancius from the observations of Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman. French explorer and astronomer Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille gave its stars Bayer designations in 1756. The constellations Pavo, Grus (constellation), Grus, Phoenix (constellation), Phoenix and Tucana are collectively known as the "Southern Birds". Pavo, Georgia
Pavo is a city that is divided by the county line between Brooks and Thomas counties in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is part of the Valdosta, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 622 in 2020. The city is home to a branch of the Thomas County Public Library System. Pavo was featured in country music star Alan Jackson's video for his hit song "Little Man", lamenting the decline of small-town America. History The community was originally known as McDonald, named after one of two prominent families in the area. However, concerns were raised about misdirected mail, resulting from confusion between McDonald, in the southern part of the state, and McDonough located in the north.
