Stonesetting
Stonesetting is the art of securely setting or attaching gemstones into jewelry. Cuts There are two general types of gemstone cutting: cabochon and facet. Cabochons are smooth, often domed, with flat backs. Agates and turquoise are usually cut this way, but precious stones such as rubies, emeralds and sapphires may also be. Many stones like star sapphires and moonstones must be cut this way in order to properly display their unusual appearance. A faceted shape resembles that of the modern diamond. It has a flat, polished surface, typically with a transparent surface that refracts light inside the gemstone and reflects light on the outside. In the case of a cabochon stone, the side of the stone is usually cut at a shallow angle, so that when the bezel is pushed over the stone, the angle permits it to hold the stone tightly in place. In the case of faceted stones, a shallow groove is cut into the side of the bezel into which the girdle of the stone is placed, with metal prongs t ... Pavê
Pavê is a Brazilian dessert that consists of alternating layers of biscuits ( ladyfingers or corn starch biscuits) and a cream made using condensed milk. It is similar in structure to the tiramisu. Generally, recipes involve heating condensed milk and milk, and stirring the mixture until it thickens. Then, layers of milk-soaked biscuits are placed into a container alternating with layers of the creamy mixture. Additionally, pavês can be made of many different flavors, such as chocolate, dulce de leche, peanut, or fruits such as strawberries, pineapples, lemons and peaches. Etymology The word ''pavê'' is said to have come from the French word , meaning cobblestone pavement. This likely refers to the layout of each of the biscuit layers in the pavê. History The origins of pavê are uncertain. However, it was created prior to the tiramisu, as the latter was invented in the late 1960s, and recipes of pavê can be found as early as 1937. Sett (paving)
A sett, also known as a block or Belgian block, is a broadly rectangular quarried stone used in paving roads and walkways. Formerly in widespread use, particularly on steeper streets because setts provided horses' hooves with better grip than a smooth surface, they are now encountered rather as decorative stone paving in landscape architecture. Setts are often referred to as "cobblestones", although a sett is distinct from a cobblestone in that it is quarried or worked to a regular shape, whereas the latter is generally a small, naturally-rounded rock. Setts are usually made of granite. Places Europe Places paved with setts include many streets in Rome and elsewhere in Italy (where blocks are called '' sampietrini'' or ''bolognini''), since the technique was first used by Romans. In Aberdeen (Scotland), and much of Edinburgh's Old Town and New Town, a large number of streets retain the original setts. Silloth on Solway, a seaside town in Cumbria, still has setts (origi ... Paves
Paves or Pavese was a Lombard troubadour of the first half of the 13th century, only a single ''cobla'' of whose work survives. The work is preserved in one chansonnier of late 13th-century Italian provenance, now known as "troubadour manuscript H" or Latin 3207, kept in the Biblioteca Vaticana, Rome. In the same manuscript are preserved two other works with the same rhyming scheme, one by Guilhem Figueira and another by Aimeric de Peguilhan. Paves' ''cobla'' is a humorous treatment of what was evidently a fight in a Florentine tavern. There is reference to a blow struck with a piece of dried bread instead of any weapon of war. The combatants were two Italians, Capitanis (or Cattano/Cattaneo) and Guillem (Guglielmo il Noioso). It has been surmised that "Capitanis" may be an allusion to Sordello, who is referred to as ''gentils catanis'' in two Occitan ''vidas''. Paves' ''cobla'' is customarily dated between 1215, when Figueira entered Italy, and 1245, the death of Aimeric de ...
