Paulson Panapa
Paulson Panapa (born 1967) is a Tuvaluan politician and has been a civil servant and diplomat. From 6 June 2014, he represented Tuvalu as the High Commissioner to Fiji. He was subsequently appointed as the High Commissioner to New Zealand from February 2017. Panapa was Assistant Clerk of the Tuvalu parliament from 1991 to 1995 and Clerk from 1995 to 2004. In 2010 Panapa was the Secretary for Works, Water and Energy. Panapa has held other roles as a senior civil servant, including in 2011 as Secretary for Education, Youth and Sports. He was also a Tuvaluan sports director. Sporting career He was educated at Motufoua Secondary School where he played in the 1st Eleven football Team in 1982-1984. He was a midfield player (2008-2009) and trainer of F.C. Tofaga. Panapa was president of the Tuvalu Islands Football Association (TIFA), from 2001 to 2005. Motufoua Secondary School
Motufoua Secondary School is a boarding school for children on Vaitupu atoll, Tuvalu. it is the largest high school in Tuvalu. As Tuvalu consists of nine islands, the students reside on Vaitupu during the school year and return to their home islands during the school vacations. The school received worldwide attention in March 2000, when a fire in a dormitory at the school killed 19 girls and an adult supervisor. It was later discovered that the fire was caused by a student using a candle to read during the night. The school celebrated 100 years of education in 2005. Establishment The London Missionary Society (LMS) established a primary school at Motufoua on Vaitupu in 1905. The purpose was to prepare young men for entry into the LMS seminary in Samoa. This school evolved into the Motufoua Secondary School. The activities of the LMS were taken over by the Church of Tuvalu. 2024 Tuvaluan General Election
General elections were held in Tuvalu on 26 January 2024. There are no political parties in Tuvalu and all candidates run as independents. Two major issues in the election were the Falepili Union treaty, which requiries both Tuvalu and Australia to "mutually agree" Tuvalu's foreign security arrangements in exchange for allowing Tuvaluans displaced by climate change to immigrate to Australia, and the country's diplomatic recognition of Taiwan within the context of great power competition between the United States and China for influence in the region. Tuvalu Islands Football Association
The Tuvalu Islands Football Association (TIFA) is the governing body of football in Tuvalu. The association is responsible for the Tuvalu national football team and the Tuvalu national futsal team. Tuvalu is not a full member and is not affiliated with FIFA. It does not compete in FIFA World Cup Qualifiers because of its non-affiliation. Football in Tuvalu is played at club and national team level. The association is a member of the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) but not affiliated to FIFA.
