Paul Stovall
Paul L. Stovall (August 16, 1948 – January 9, 1978) was an American basketball small forward in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the Phoenix Suns. He also was a member of the San Diego Conquistadors in the American Basketball Association (ABA).He was recruited and played basketball for Pratt Community Junior College straight out of prison. He played college basketball for the Arizona State Sun Devils. Early years Stovall experience a troubled youth, being in jail at the Kansas State Industrial Reformatory in Hutchinson after being convicted for a series of crimes, before even attending high school. It was while serving time, that he developed physically and as a basketball player. He was a part of the prison basketball team that toured small towns throughout Kansas between 1966 and 1967. The 1973–74 San Diego Conquistadors season was the second season in franchise history. During the offseason, the Conquistadors not only moved away from the Peterson Gym to the Golden Hall in the hopes of finding better luck with gaining fans there despite it having less seating by comparison, but they also acquired legendary Los Angeles Lakers center Wilt Chamberlain with the intention of using him as a player-coach for their franchise, though a judge later ruled that he could only coach for the team and not play for them. As a result of that ruling, he subsequently left a chunk of the coaching duties to assistant coach Stan Albeck since Chamberlain proved to not have much interest in coaching basketball as he did playing it. The 1972–73 Phoenix Suns season was the fifth for the Phoenix Suns of the National Basketball Association, as well as the first season with Al McCoy taking on broadcasting duties for the team. The season began under head coach Butch Van Breda Kolff for the first seven games, before Jerry Colangelo finished coaching duties for the team. All home games were played at Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Charlie Scott had played in six games for the Suns one season ago, after a late-season switch to the NBA from the ABA, and his first full season with the Suns was arguably his best.
