Paul Sliter
Paul Sliter (May 5, 1969 – August 15, 2001) was an American politician and businessman who served as a member of the Montana House of Representatives for the 76th district from 1994 until 2001. Early life and education Sliter was born in Kalispell, Montana, and graduated from Flathead County High School in 1987. He received his bachelor's degree in political science from University of Montana in 1996. As a college student, Sliter served as an intern in the office of Senator Conrad Burns. Career Sliter worked as the sales and credit manager at the Sliter's Ace Lumber and Building Supply in Bigfork, Montana. Sliter served in the Montana House of Representatives from 1994 until his death in 2001. A Republican, he also served as House majority leader. Personal life Sliter lived with his wife and family in Somers, Montana. Kalispell, Montana
Kalispell (, Montana Salish: Ql̓ispé, Kutenai language: kqayaqawakⱡuʔnam) is a city in, and the county seat of, Flathead County, Montana, United States. The 2020 census put Kalispell's population at 24,558. In Montana's northwest region, it is the largest city, and the commercial center, of the Kalispell Micropolitan Statistical Area. The name Kalispell is a Salish word meaning "flat land above the lake". History Using his own capital, Charles Edward Conrad, a businessman and banker from Fort Benton, Montana, formed the Kalispell Townsite Company with three other men. The townsite was quickly platted and lots began selling by the spring of 1891. Conrad built a large mansion in Kalispell in 1895. Kalispell was officially incorporated as a city in 1892. Somers, Montana
Somers is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Flathead County, Montana, United States. The population was 1,049 at the 2020 census, nearly double from 556 in the 2000 census. History Great Northern Railway magnate James J. Hill contracted to build a sawmill on the north end of Flathead Lake in 1900. A town was developed for the workers. The town was named for George O. Somers, a Vice President of the Great Northern Railroad, and the person responsible for overseeing the development of the new lumber town. In 1909, the ''Industrial Worker'', a newspaper published out of Seattle by the Industrial Workers of the World, described Somers thus: The IWW at the time was in dispute with Jim Hill in connection with strike waves throughout the Flathead Valley, especially centered in Kalispell. Bernie Olson is an American educator, businessman, and politician from Montana. Olson is a former Republican member of the Montana House of Representatives. Early life Olson was born in Butte, Montana. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Montana. Career From 1968 to 1974, Olson served in the United States Army Reserve. From 1970 to 1999, he worked as a teacher. In 1999, he became the president of Willow Creek Farm. On November 5, 2002, Olson was elected to the Montana House of Representatives for the 76th district. Bigfork, Montana
Bigfork is a census-designated place (CDP) in Flathead County, Montana, United States. It is within Montana's Rocky Mountains. The population was 4,270 at the 2010 census, up from 1,421 in 2000. History Some say the name "Bigfork" is derived from the Salish name for the area. However Bigfork is a fork where two rivers, the Flathead River and the Swan River, flow in to the Flathead Lake. There are reports of a homestead and orchard immediately north of Bigfork as early as 1885. Everit L. Sliter set out 500 apple, cherry, plum, and pear trees in 1892 on Flathead Lake's east shore. He became the first postmaster in 1901. In 1902, he platted the Bigfork townsite at the mouth of the Swan River. The east shore has since become a major cherry-growing area. Conrad Burns
Conrad Ray Burns (January 25, 1935 – April 28, 2016) was an American politician who served as a United States Senator from Montana and later was a lobbyist. He was only the second Republican popularly elected to represent Montana in the Senate and was the longest-serving Republican senator in Montana history. While in the Senate, Burns sat on the Senate Appropriations Committee and was the chairman of its Subcommittee on the Interior. He was also chairman of the Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee's Communications subcommittee. Early life Burns was born on a farm near Gallatin, Missouri, to Russell and Mary Frances (Knight) Burns. He graduated from Gallatin High School in 1952 and then enrolled in the College of Agriculture at the University of Missouri. He was also a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity.
