Paul Schaap
P.A. (Paul) Schaap (Wageningen, 31 January 1950) is a former Dutch military soldier and former employee at the nuclear reactor in Petten. He became well known as a whistleblower within the nuclear reactor Petten. Nowadays Schaap works as a journalist. Whistleblower In 2001 Schaap was a Deputy Chief of Staff at the nuclear reactor in Petten. Schaap noticed that the reactor had very tight supply contracts, which resulted in the reactor continuously running even after malfunctions. Schaap addressed this internally in a so-called blackbook, with no result. After that, Schaap decided to address the security problems externally, to the director of the Kernfysische Dienst. Even after promises from the director to let Schaap stay anonymous in the matter, his name became publicly known, which led to a labor dispute. Maartensdijk
Maartensdijk is a village in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It is a part of the municipality of De Bilt, and lies about 4 km north of Bilthoven. History Maartensdijk was a separate municipality until 2001, when it merged with De Bilt. Until 1812 Maartensdijk was called Oostveen which is pronounced as 'oastfain'. Oostveen means "east fen". A fen is a wetland characterized by sphagnum moss, peat and an alkaline or neutral pH. Rendering this wetland into agricultural land was initiated by Bishop Godebald van Utrecht (1114–1127) when the Kromme Rijn ("Crooked Rhine") was dammed in 1122 at Wijk bij Duurstede. The same Bishop Godebald gave land development contracts to those who would completely drain this land and make it arable; Oostveen was a large section of this area. A nuclear reactor is a device used to initiate and control a fission nuclear chain reaction or nuclear fusion reactions. Petten
Petten is a village in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Schagen, and lies about 15 km northwest of Alkmaar, on the North Sea. The population is ca. 1900. Petten's economy is based on agriculture (bulb cultivation), and tourism. A particular type sand can be found on the beach of Petten, of sanded quartz with granite. Since 1997 a plan has been developed for a marina with 600 places; called ''Marina Petten''. The Petten High Flux Reactor (HFR), is a nuclear research reactor located in Petten, The Netherlands. The HFR is on the premises of the Petten research centre and it is a high flux reactor. It is owned by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) and managed by the Nuclear Research and Consultancy Group (NRG). Medical importance Apart from its function as a research centre, the HFR is a large producer of radioactive material for the purpose of medical diagnosis and the treatment of cancer (radiopharmaceuticals).
