Paul Hardrock Simpson
Paul James "Hardrock" Simpson, Sr. (September 2, 1904 – July 3, 1978) ran ultra distances and extreme races beginning in the late 1920s and continuing into the 1950s. Simpson was a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service in Burlington, North Carolina. Simpson made a name for himself by winning a long-distance race against a horse, and went on to compete in numerous distance races as long as across the continent. The horse died as a result of the race. Simpson was a 1931 graduate of Elon University. In 1928, Simpson competed in the Trans-American Footrace from Los Angeles to New York City. Almost two hundred people began the race, but only fifty-five reached the finish line; Simpson was among them, placing 36th. Long-distance Running
Long-distance running, or endurance running, is a form of continuous running over distances of at least . Physiologically, it is largely aerobic in nature and requires stamina as well as mental strength. Within endurance running come two different types of respiration. The more prominent side that runners experience more frequently is aerobic respiration. This occurs when oxygen is present, and the body can utilize oxygen to help generate energy and muscle activity. Trans-American Footrace
One of the earliest twentieth century multiday races was the inaugural Trans-American Footrace, which took place in 1928 starting at Legion Ascot Speedway in Los Angeles and finishing in New York City in Madison Square Garden for a distance of . Out of the 199 runners who left Los Angeles on March 4, 1928, at 3:30 p.m., only 55 runners finished on May 26, 1928. The race took 84 days to run from coast to coast. Andy Payne won the event in 573 hours, 4 minutes, 34 seconds. It was called the Bunion Derby by newspapers and was also held in 1929. The race was organized by C. C. Pyle. The Carolina League is a Minor League Baseball league which has operated along the Atlantic Coast of the United States since 1945. Burlington Athletic Stadium is a baseball stadium in Burlington, North Carolina. It seats 3,500 and serves as the home field for the Burlington Sock Puppets of the Appalachian League.
