Paul Devens
Paul Devens (born 1965 in Maastricht, the Netherlands) is a Dutch contemporary artist. He lives and works in Maastricht. Drawing on a research-based approach within his artistic practice, Paul Devens develops bodies of works that connect sound and architectural elements. As he generates and collects site-specific audio recordings, Devens actively considers the physical space and social context. He does this through the method of “acousmatic listening”: selecting aspects from particular situations and implementing them in a new one, oftentimes critiquing the original situation. His research manifests in sound-based installations, architectonic interventions, performances, and CD and vinyl releases. He considers the presence of the audience as an integral part of his installations and performances. Basak Senova is an art curator, writer and designer from Istanbul, Turkey. She lives and works in Vienna since 2017. She holds an MFA in graphic design and a PhD in art, design and architecture from Bilkent University, and is active internationally with art and technology-related projects. Al Ma’mal Foundation for Contemporary Art is a non-profit arts organization founded in 1998 and based in the Old City (Jerusalem). Its programming includes Contemporary art exhibitions, live music, an artist residency program, and workshops. History Al Ma’mal is situated in the former Kassissieh Tile Factory; Ma’mal means “factory” in Arabic. In 1900, the Kassissieh family established a tile factory in the Old City. The Bonnefanten Museum is a museum of fine art in Maastricht, Netherlands. History The museum was founded in 1884 as the historical and archaeological museum of the Dutch province of Limburg. The name Bonnefanten Museum is derived from the French 'bons enfants' ('good children'), the popular name of a former convent that housed the museum from 1951 until 1978. In 1995, the museum moved to its present location, a former industrial site named 'Céramique'. The new building was designed by Italian architect Aldo Rossi. Alvin Augustus Lucier Jr. (May 14, 1931 – December 1, 2021) was an American composer of experimental music and sound installations that explore acoustic phenomena and auditory perception. A long-time music professor at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, Lucier was a member of the influential Sonic Arts Union, which included Robert Ashley, David Behrman, and Gordon Mumma.
