Paul Desiré Nestor Verschaffelt
Paul Desiré Nestor Verschaffelt (21 May 1887 – 16 February 1959) was a barrister, solicitor, and the third Public Service Commissioner in New Zealand. Early life Verschaffelt was born in Napier in 1887. Career On 1 January 1904, Verschaffelt entered the public service as a clerical cadet in the Department of Lands and Survey. On 1 February 1913 he shifted to the newly established Office of the Public Service Commissioner as a clerk. In 1915 he was promoted to secretary, and after graduating LLB from Victoria University College in 1919 was admitted as a barrister and solicitor. Between 1919 and 1921 Verschaffelt served as controller of wills, trusts and agencies and as chief accountant in the Public Trust Office. He returned to the Office of the Public Service Commissioner as assistant commissioner on 1 March 1921. In February 1923, on the retirement of William R. Carl Berendsen
Sir Carl August Berendsen (16 August 1890 – 12 September 1973) was a New Zealand civil servant and diplomat. After being in the Education and Labour Departments he joined the Prime Minister's Department in 1926, becoming its head in 1935. He was the creator of the Department of External Affairs, and collaborated with Michael Joseph Savage and Peter Fraser. He was Secretary for External Affairs 1928–32, Head of the Prime Minister's Department 1932–43, and Secretary of the War Cabinet 1939–43. He attended all Imperial Conferences 1926–43, and assemblies of the League of Nations and later the United Nations. Berendsen served as the country's first High Commissioner to Australia, from 1943 until 1944; this was to improve relations with Australia ( John Curtin) and for health reasons because of Fraser's notoriously disorganised work habits. Mount Eden Prisons
Mount Eden Prisons consists of two separate facilities in the Auckland, New Zealand suburb of Mount Eden — the Mount Eden Prison and the Mount Eden Corrections Facility. History The original Mount Eden prison was a military stockade built in 1856. It became Auckland's main prison when the old city jail on the corner of Queen and Victoria Streets was demolished in 1865. The stone wall and the foundations were completed in 1872, the building proper was commenced in 1882 and finished in 1917. Intended to house 220 prisoners, it was designed by Pierre Finch Martineau Burrows and resembles Dartmoor Prison in England. Its design consisted of wings radiating from the centre like the spokes of a wheel. This allowed for control from the centre and "a new mode of obtaining power of mind over mind", an application of the panopticon prison design theories of Jeremy Bentham. Hanmer Springs
Hanmer Springs is a small town in the Canterbury region of the South Island of New Zealand, known for its hot pools. The Māori name for Hanmer Springs is Te Whakatakanga o te Ngārahu o te ahi a Tamatea, which means "where the ashes of Tamatea's fire lay", referring to Tamatea, the captain of the canoe Tākitimu. Hanmer Springs is located north-west of Christchurch and south-west of Kaikōura ( by road), in the Hurunui District. The town lies on a minor road north of State Highway 7, the northern route between Christchurch and the West Coast via Lewis Pass. The township lies at the base of Conical Hill. Queen Mary Hospital (Hanmer Springs)
Queen Mary Hospital, in Hanmer Springs, New Zealand is a former residential alcohol and drug treatment hospital. It opened in 1916 to treat returned servicemen from World War I, on the site of a sanatorium built in 1879. From the 1920s to 1960s it treated mental health conditions generally but in the 1970s it became the national specialist addiction and alcohol treatment centre. The hospital closed in November 2003. The Queen Mary Hospital (Former) and Hanmer Springs Thermal Reserve Historic Area was designated as a historic site by Heritage New Zealand in 2004. Within that area three buildings, the Soldiers' Block, Nurses' Home and Chisholm Block, were given Category I protection by Heritage New Zealand in 2005.
