Paul Desfarges
Paul Jacques Marie Desfarges (born 7 May 1944) is a retired French-Algerian Society of Jesus, Jesuit priest who served as the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Algiers, Archbishop of Algiers from 2016 to 2021. Career Desfarges arrived in Algeria in 1965 for military service. He taught as a civilian in a White Fathers school in Ghardaia. Returning to France, he decided to become a Society of Jesus, Jesuit and joined the novitiate on 14 October 1967. After his vows as religious, and theological studies, he was ordained a priest on 14 June 1975. He made his solemn profession on 30 April 1981. Desfarges then spent nearly 30 years in Constantine, Algeria, Constantine, where, among other subjects, he taught psychology at the Constantine 1 University, university from 1976 to 2006. In 1982, he obtained Algerian citizenship. Beginning in 2006, he headed the spiritual center Ben Smen to Algiers, while the upper Algiers Jesuit community. Gabriel Jules Joseph Piroird, Institute of Prado (5 October 1932 – 3 April 2019) was a French-born Algerian Roman Catholic prelate who served as the fourteenth Diocesan Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Constantine from 25 March 1983 until his retirement on 21 November 2008. Biography Gabriel Piroird was born in Lyons and as a young person joined a secular institute of the Institute of the Priests of Prado, founded by Blessed Antoine Chevrier. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Constantine (-Hippone) (, ) is a Roman Catholic diocese in the ecclesiastical province of Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Alger, Algiers in Algeria. History Already since the second century the town of Constantine, then known as Cirta, was the seat of a bishop until the region fell to the Muslim conquest of the Maghreb, invading Arab Muslims in the seventh century. On 25 July 1866, the diocese was established from the Diocese of Algiers as Diocese of Constantine. Its name was changed to the Diocese of Constantine (-Hippone) on 23 September 1867.
