Patrick McCarthy (born 1947) is an English conductor and singer. Biography McCarthy trained as a baritone singer at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the London Opera Centre. He first attended The Proms in 1959. 7 August 1974 On 7 August 1974, McCarthy was in attendance at The Proms performance of Carl Orff's ''Carmina Burana'', performed by the London Symphony Orchestra and conducted by André Previn in the Royal Albert Hall. During the performance of the Orff, Thomas Allen (now Sir Thomas), the baritone soloist, fell ill during the performance, collapsed onto his chair, and was carried off from the stage. McCarthy went backstage and offered his services as a professional singer who was experienced with the piece. The understudy for the part, a member of the London Symphony Chorus, was a doctor and attended to Allen, and thus was unable to step into the performance. Patrick McCarthy is a record producer from Dublin, Ireland, who has worked for several rock and alternative rock artists, including The Waterboys, Counting Crows, R.E.M., and U2. Patrick McCarthy MBE is an Irish Nationalist former politician, in Northern Ireland, who was Lord Mayor of Belfast from 2006 to 2007. As a member of the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP), he was a Belfast City Councillor for the Laganbank DEA from 2001 to 2014. Background Born and raised in the Markets area of Belfast, McCarthy was interned without trial in 1971 on suspicion of being a member of the Official IRA, before being released in 1972. He was first elected to Belfast City Council, at the 2001 local elections, as an SDLP representative for the Laganbank District. Patrick Covell Derrick McCarthy (24 October 1919 – 23 December 2007) was a Ceylon-born cricketer who played first-class cricket for Ceylon in the 1940s before moving to Australia and playing for Western Australia in the 1950s. In Ceylon Pat McCarthy attended Royal College, Colombo, where he played in the cricket team for several years. In March and April 1936 he was a member of the Royal College team that toured Australia, the first tour of Australia by an Asian cricket team at any level of cricket. He was the team's highest scorer on the tour. He captained the team to victory in the Royal-Thomian match in March 1938. Two weeks after the Royal-Thomian match, aged 18, McCarthy played for Ceylon in a one-day match against the touring Australians, scoring 24 batting at number four. Pat McCarthy (born 1950) is an Irish former Gaelic footballer who played as a midfielder for the Kerry and Kildare senior teams. A nephew of 1940s player Phil McCarthy, Pat McCarthy was a naturally strong player with excellent hands and a good jump. He was part of the Kerry Under-21 team in the early 1970s till the demise of the great Mick O'Connell and the failure of young midfield pretenders like DJ Crowley and John O'Keeffe before getting a proper chance on the senior squad under Mick O'Dwyer. Patrick James McCarthy is an Irish judge who has served as a Judge of the Court of Appeal since July 2018. He previously served as a Judge of the High Court from 2007 to 2018. McCarthy obtained a BCL degree from University College Cork and attended the King's Inns. He became a barrister in 1982 and became a senior counsel in 2000.
